I am a nursing student and almost finished with school thank goodness. It has been almost impossible for me to get through school being as exhausted as I am. Fighting to stay awake and fighting some odd symptoms. Lately I have been having what I would describe as brain "zaps" kind of like a feeling of electricity in my head or as if someone is "stirring" my brains. When I have this feeling I feel like I could faint. I was wondering if this could be mild cataplexy? Another question I have is if anyone gets blurred vision when having a sleepy episode? How about tingling in the legs? I also have been seeing color shapes/auras around objects lately...is that narcolepsy? I feel that my symptoms are progressing/worsening. My fear is that I will be unable to finish school or be unable to work in the future. I really would appreciate advice on this. Thanks so much

i get what sounds similar to your "brain zaps". It seems to take a me a moment or to to reset after it happens. I get t is response to embarrassment or frustration. I don't get blurred vision but I have heard of those that do. seems to make sense as sudden muscle weakness could effect the eye focus. i get the tingling in the leg thing too or a knee flex. No color auras. But I do get migraines without headaches that do involve changes in vision. Also BPV can feel like a "brain zap". When my BPV is acting up I will get a vibrating feeling in my head when I look up. It is different from the sensation I get from embarrassment. Something you may like to hear is that i got the brain zaps, I called them shame rushes often in my early thirties. I was started on prozac-very low dose (no one thought narcolepsy) This greatly decreased the zaps and also decreased my highway hypnosis and distracting daydreaming. So it treated a lot of symptoms that weren't even identified as symptoms. There was no increase in cat symptoms for over 20 years. There seems to have been a slight increase lately, but they still are very seldom and very mild. My biggest fear when diagnosed was that I would progress to getting major cats...hasn't happened. Hope that gives you some comfort.

I do get blurred vision during sleep attacks. I alread wear glasses to see far away, but when that comes over me, nothing helps. It's very frustrating especially if I'm trying to concentrate, work, or really was interested in what I was watching/reading. I think I have mild cats, but mainly I just get VERY weak arms. There are also times that I just don't feel like I have the energy to walk my dog just outside the house because my legs feel so weak. I do see things flash by sometimes, but I chalk it up to a microsleep or something of that nature. I am scared that things will get worse for me, as I was just dx about 2 1/2 years ago. However today with treatment I am a full time mom, wife, and employee wtih hopes to start back to school in Jan. When were you dx with N? It's not easy, but we are all here to help.

This is definitely cataplexy and it's not very mild. Once you start zapping, it happens more frequently and severely. Idk if you first started recognizing and feeling prior to this, like vertigo. For a split second, and maybe wrote it off to poor sleep or low pressure/sugar spells. That's how mine started.

This sounds like me. I used to get brain zaps (not had them for a couple of years now if thats possible). They usually occurred when I was falling asleep if I remember correctly. I also get tingling legs especially when i am afraid (i didn't realise that it could be cataplexy!) I also get very weak legs too but reckon i'm just unfit. I also get blurred vision on some days. I keep catching flashes of light as if something is speeding past me and I also get the auras around objects, especially at night. Hmmm, I didn't really think that I could have Narcolepsy but this makes me wonder

Just remembered that i suffered from vertigo around about the same time. It was really weird. I would hear a click in my brin and then the room would start to drop away from me or start to spin. I wouldn't be doing anything in particular at the time and I was under the impression that cataplexy's trigger was strong emotions,

I can only relate to the 'brain zaps' description. Look up 'Exploding Head Syndrome' I dislike the name of it, but oh well. I have many many hypnic jerks upon falling asleep, most of the time it feels like I'm on the brink of sleep, but I'm quickly jerked out like flicking a fishing line out of the water. Sometimes those hypnic jerks are also accompanied by extremely loud noise, more than a bang, more like a 'Big Bang' that happens in just a fraction of a second. Sometimes I physically check my ears to see if they are bleeding as I 'must' have blown out my eardrums. I've never had this happen while awake.
