Narcolepsy Support Group
A sleep disorder (somnipathy) is a disorder in the sleep patterns of a person or animal. Some sleep disorders can interfere with mental and emotional function. If you are having trouble falling asleep or having some other kind of sleep disturbance, this group is for you.
I am hoping that there are other forms of therapies which may also take the edge off, but I have not come across them.
I hope that helps..
Needless to say it did take some time for me to warm up to the idea of a "holistic" doctor treating my narcolepsy and not a specialist, so it took a couple of months before I actually made the switch. I'm glad I did switch as hes defied all my expectations and I've achieved more progress with this guy in two months than I ever did in two and a half years with the sleep specialist and neurologist. I still take adderall, 90 mg/daily, but also take a couple of supplements that both increase the adderall's effectiveness and increase my functioning as a whole.
I take a thyroid supplement (natural, not hormones), vitamin D & K supplement and a folate supplement called Deplin. The thyroid and vitamin D supplements were given to me after a full blood workup was done to see how my body was functioning, something no other doctor thought to do. The Deplin was prescribed before these two to help me with depression and increase the effectiveness of the adderall, which has proven to be a far more effective antidepressant than any SSRI that I have taken by many orders of magnitude. My point of this is that a holistic approach to narcolepsy has proven far more effective for me than a standard approach and is in my opinion necessary for a patient to achieve optimum functioning. Keep in mind that this approach does not eliminate the need for medication like adderall, to put it simply it is a supportive approach. I'm not necessarily recommending that EVERYONE take this route as what may work for me may not work for someone else.
Thanks also about writing about the supplements. I take 5 HTP and B complex which helps.
Sariah I agree that eating well is very important. But how sad that most of us simply do not have the energy to cook well. When I have some energy I cook up a batch of food. I hate giving my kids processed stuff but sometimes you simply have to accept that that is the best you can do. I feel at least 75% better if I eat wholesome cooked meals, but it is so frustrating not to be able to do that all the time. When I am really low, I eat whatever I can get my hands on and then my digestive sytem is out for days. But when I am going through a good spell I can cook and it makes a ton of difference. I have put on a stone and a half since having N. That is so depressing. There seems to be no control of what it can do to our lives at times. Even when I go through a month of being able to eat well, I simply can't shift the weight. This is not a pleasant side effect. Is weight gain the norm, I am guessing it is? Thanks again.
