Myofascial Pain Syndrome Support Group
Myofascial Pain Syndrome (or MPS) is a term used to describe one of the conditions characterized by chronic pain. It is associated with and caused by "trigger points" (TrPs), sensitive and painful areas between the muscle and fascia. The symptoms can range from referred pain through myofascial trigger points to specific pains in other areas of the body. It may be related...
I think this one is especially perfect for the IT band. It comes in 2 sizes, travel and regular size. I have the travel because I have 3 other foam rollers that are regular size.

The other would be the Rumble Roller- this is what cured my upper back, trap TrPs. It may be a little to harsh for IT band. But great for the legs and bum too.

Glad your going to give it a shot! I'm not gonna lie, in the beginning you will hurt and maybe even cry, or laugh from the insanity but it will eventually not be so unpleasant and the results are worth it.
Best pain pill out there :)
Good luck Chem?

Good luck no matter what you decided to purchase.
Kat, the reason I want to go to a roller is that I took a short hike this last Saturday, and loved it. The trigger points in my right IT band wakened up by this exertion are so manifold that it is hard to address them one by one (besides massaging the pectoral trigger points).
Yes rollers are painful, but as the facia loosens and separates, the pain of using them becomes less and less. Foam rollers are most defiantly designed for people that are having muscle issues. My old roommate (a guy) screamed like a little girl the first few times of trying it, same with my partner. Any exercise therapist on YouTube will tell you you will be sore and in pain afterwards, it is all a normal reaction.
My MFR PT assistant has IT band syndrome and she suggested the orange roller made by Trigger Point. She's says she doesn't know wether to laugh or cry using it, but it has allowed her to walk without pain
If it wasn't for my continued use of foam rollers I would still be in 10+ pain and not walking. So I really don't see the difference if you are in pain anyway to try something that successfully works for millions of people. Being at 70% improvement was worth any pain I experienced using them.
Chemi- I wouldn't suggest you start out with a Rumble Roller until your facia becomes more use to foam rolling. The first one I suggested would be more appropriate and is a very good all round device. That really does hold up well.
Take a look at Biobabes journal- foam rolling is helping her too.
I would also suggest you read the reviews. They are full of people with all sorts of pain problems that have improved.
Just wanted to chip in that I started out using a travel roller. Simple, basic, without nubs like the rumble roller as I heard it can take a while to get used to rolling.
Best of luck!

I think its great it works for you and so many, many, many others, Im thrilled that you are recovering.
Kat
I'm with Kat. The only thing I can tolerate, roller-wise, is my little wooden roller from The Body Shop http://www.thebodyshop-usa.com/body-products/massage-products/twin-ball-massager.aspx and I only used that back in the beginning when I couldn't tolerate anything else.
For me, going hardcore with these rollers just causes really bad reactions. I learnt a long time ago that anything but super-gentle sends me into flare ups that turn me upside down and inside out! I guess we're all the same, but just a little bit different :)
Good luck with whatever you choose, hope it does the trick for you
