Bear glad you had that sorted,for me it was the combination of Prednisone and Imuran that gave me skin issues.l suppose living in the so called sunshine state probably didn't help much either.

l was lucky that at each big checkup,l had a full skin scan thingy,the strip naked while we check every where for changes ...and l mean every where.l had several small lesion lasered and one surgical removal from a not so good place.

So yes people skin checks are on the agenda as well,don't forget bone density tests while your at it.

I'm glad you got that taken care of, Bear, It seems that prednisone makes all kinds of things bloom on our skin from pimples to keratoses to basil cell. The other immunosuppressants are also known to make you more susceptible to skin cancers, so sun screen, even in the winter is really necessary. If you are as good about wearing it as my husband, then you will need extra Vitamin D since you cannot make it without the sun. b.

You know, Bear, a real man would have just taken the yard clippers and snipped off enough of the ear to get the problem area, then used superglue and duct tape to patch the wound ;-)

Sorry to hear about the problem. All of the common immune system treatments (prednisone, imuran, cellcept) have warnings about increased chances of cancer. Our immune system does protect us from some cancer cells growing, so a lowered immune system leaves us somewhat more open to cancer and other diseases we may have fought off naturally. The good news is that this is not commonly seen with the drugs.

Hope you heal quickly and things go well and you don't get too hooked on tranquilizers!

I have had several basal and squamous lesions cut out over the years and I haven't even started treatment yet.. Unfortunately I have that fair Celtic skin and red-blonde hair.

I live in sunny south africa and was a swimmer so you can imagine.
My neuro and the prof told me not allowed in the sun at all thats very difficult and I was put on high dose vit d once a week. Sunblock big hat etc.

We will just have to go around looking like very badly disguised detectives during the day, with our big floppy hats, wrap around sun glasses and ankle length overcoats, rather conspicuous in the heat. I had to do that one May when photosensitive to an antibiotic (one we are not supposed to take, anyway). It was during exam week in college. Lol. :-) b

Tacrolimus increases risk of skin cancer as well; I went to Mexico last year and always sat fully clothed and sunscreen lathered under the umbrella knitting..I only undressed for going in the water (not enough muscle strenth for swimming) with floating device. Mexico is just too hot for an MGer for sure. Not again.

I do not have MG. Just happened to find this post about skin cancer , which I do have history of. I have RA and take prednisone for that, so when your post came up relating one to the other I wanted to know more. As far as I know in my RA group, nobody has addressed this. I doubt the prednisone is the only reason for my multiple skin cancers since I have strong family history, and yes, am also Irish and fair skinned plus live in very sunny So. Calif. To make it all worse, I stupidly spent the first half of my live purposely getting as tan & dark as possible, including the stupidest thing of all.....tanning beds.

My last 2 comments are, thank you for this post, as it is important and I will be letting my doctors know about this (even though it should have been them telling ME.)
And Bear, you are NOT stupid. Your wife stopping you from using the duct tape, that brings me fond memories of my husband ; he was always doing that. He worked on a barge and every injury at work was treated that way. Ripped my arm off today...no problem--duct tape !
