Myasthenia Gravis Support Group
Myasthenia gravis (MG) is a neuromuscular disease leading to fluctuating muscle weakness and fatiguability. The hallmark of myasthenia gravis is muscle weakness that increases during periods of activity and improves after periods of rest. Boil some water so your house is humid. That always helps a cold. Try to do whatever helps you to rest or relax. Take care

* Generally speaking, myasthenics must avoid cold meds, that contain magnesium. (''Airborne'' and similar medicines - are loaded with magnesium.)
* Give yourself as much rest as you possibly can. And the better, the quality of rest? That - can accomplish quite a bit.
* If you feel that you have been sick with a cold or flu bug, longer than a week? And you are no better? Maybe it's time to see your physician. Keep in mind: some antibiotics are also - not good for people with MG.
That's the short list! (Told you - it would only take a minute!)
Stay tuned. There will be other people, with better info.

Sidenote: there has been an awful cold bug, making the rounds - since well before the New Year. I have managed to avoid it. But a lot of people around me, came down with the bug. These were otherwise healthy people, and it took them - a good 3 weeks - to get over this particular strain.
If it is sleep you are after, I remember asking my Neuro if it was "ok" to take NyQuil to get some sleep when I had a cough last year. I never did take it, and just toughed through it. She said it was ok, and said to try to limit it, of course. The Nyquil just knocks you out, so make sure you are ready for bed IF you decide to try it.
I wish you well...Get some rest.

I've followed and looked into the cold medicine question over the last couple of months. As always there seems to be a wide variety of responses to cold meds. Several have said their neuro warns them away from benadryl but the generally accepted pre-treatment for ivig includes benadryl. I've taken it with no problems. I'm sure there are others who have had significant problems with it. I guess it is another case of we have to try things carefully and see how they work out for us.
I hope you feel understood and welcomed here.
