Hi, I saw the movie last week. Very moving. Flashbacks are quite confronting. I must admit I closed my eyes in a few scenes. Excellent acting performances! I secretly fancy Colin Firth! And Nicole Kidman is an Aussie! Thanks for the tip! There are some great movies out at the moment and its a chance to get out of our heat! Gez

Interesting, but I am wondering about the MG among the POWs. Was it that, or weakness from malnutrition, disease, and torture?

Hope - I have read , but I am no expert - that the reason for the spike in Mg in pow camps was at least partly because of poor nutrition . I have read where Europe also had an increase in MG cases after the war . The same would apply as most of their food came from us and it was dehydrated and I suppose hard to get for a while..

Fascinating--I will check this movie out. I too am interested in what the correlation between MG and imprisonment, and whether that has any bearing on those of us who are, happily, not in POW situations.

WOW.....what does this mean?????? I know that Gulf War Syndrome is treated with Mestinon and at least mimicks the disease.....

Soldiers in the Gulf War were given Mestinon (very low dose) as a protective from exposure to nerve gas. Nerve gas and botulism are other indications for an anticholinesterase like Mestinon. And Cobra bites should you run into any. There were studies that showed soldiers who were pretreated handled nerve gas exposure better.

The association with the Gulf War Syndrome was that there was some concern that giving an anticholinesterase like Mestinon to normal soldiers contributed to the Gulf War Syndrome, but so far as I know, that was NOT the case. b.

Thanks for the information on the movie. I hope that there will be a release date soon in the US. I was trying to learn more about the MG aspect of the man's life and I learned that he was diagnosed with it 10 years before his death. He lived quite a long time after the POW stage of life before MG made it's presence known. Also, his death was attributed to the MG. I read several interviews with his second wife hoping to learn more about his struggle with MG but aside from the information above, there was little else provided on that aspect. I'm going to continue to read what I can so that I can learn more.

On a side note, my ex-husband was actually pre-treated with Mestinon prior to being sent to Saudi Arabia in the Gulf War. He was sent directly into the oil fields where there was "suspected" nerve gas bombs dropped to kill those still trying to operate the oil machinery. He said that he didn't remember having any ill effects from it at the time either. The interesting thing is that he did remember feeling like he didn't have as much strength or endurance once they took them off of it. That was done upon leaving the high risk areas. It's interesting that I actually remember him telling me about it. I kept all of our letters from the time when we were married so when my neuro talked about MG and that they used mestinon to treat the symptoms I grabbed my big box of letters. I found that set of letters and poured over them reading everything that he said about it way back when. Then I sent him a message on facebook to see if he could remember any other details. Unfortunately, he is old now (hehehe) so he couldn't add much. I thought that some of you might find that interesting too.
Anyway, I hope to be able to see the movie as well.
