Hi everyone. I needs some advice on dental procedure. I broke a tooth and the dentist said he could put a crown on it, but I remember faintly the doctor telling me if I ever needed any dental work, to make sure I inform the dentist of my MG. I read that Novocaine is a no go for MGers. Is this true? My dentist didn't even seem to care about the MG, and said he needed to give me a couple shots (of Novocaine) and remove the piece of the tooth that was broken off and drill the sharp edge off. I was a little concerned, so I opted to pass on the Novocaine and tuff it out. It only took about 90 seconds, and wasn't really that bad. But the fact that he doesn't seem to care about my condition, and it's more important to inform me that he doesn't accept my dental insurance anymore, and it will cost me $1340 out of pocket made me feel it's all about the money and not my health. So I'm going to a new dentist, but I got to inform him about the MG. I know he probably doesn't have a clue or even heard of it for that matter, but what I want to know, has anybody had any reaction to Novocaine or any other anesthetics at the dentist. Any problems or things I or the dentist should know? Thanks. Tim.

I would certainly get another dentist. Having discussed my MG with the dentist I go to he was concerned and told me he did not use Novocaine but something similar that MG would tolerate. There is the issue of respiratory failure with dental work and the dentist should be informed of all the medications you are currently taking. His receptionist never asks me for a medication update during my visits so I make a point of telling her if there has been a change for the record. I have had bridges put in and need three implants but currently am in a relapse so everything has been put on hold. Hope this helps.

I would read the brochure and take a copy to your dental team. They may ignore it, but at least you know what to be aware of. My dentist was quite interested in finding out more about how to treat me and I think actually read the info.

It is my understanding that Mepivocaine is tolerated well by MGers. Marcaine is another one. Novocaine, lidocaine and procaine are on the no-no list.
