Myasthenia Gravis Support Group
Myasthenia gravis (MG) is a neuromuscular disease leading to fluctuating muscle weakness and fatiguability. The hallmark of myasthenia gravis is muscle weakness that increases during periods of activity and improves after periods of rest. Although myasthenia gravis may affect any voluntary muscle, muscles that control eye and eyelid movement, facial expression, and...
It would seem to be a neurological symptom, so you should report it to your doctor
Mestinon surely does give us muscle cramps. Drugs.com says for less common side effects
Bloody nose; burning feeling; change in vision; crawling, itching feeling; difficulty in moving; dry skin; impaired vision; increased need to urinate; joint pain; muscle aching or cramping; muscle pains or stiffness; neck pain; numbness; passing urine more often; pins and needles feeling; prickling feeling; swollen joints; tingling feeling
No, it is not pins and needles; the sensation is truly small explosions that have to be muscles firing, or being triggered to fire--far too often, especially at 5 am! For some reason, my neuro does not think the muscle spasms or the muscle firings are related to Mestinon. I disagree. (Sigh) I just can't figure out what it means.
I decided to experiment and take half of my nightly Mestinon extended release capsule in case my MG was improving, and I did not need that much Mestinon. My theory was perhaps the full dose of Mestinon resulted in too much acetylcholine being in the nerve junction and causing the firings.
I have also begun to supplement Potassium, even though my levels were normal 6 months ago. I'm not sure if my insurance will pay for another potassium level right now.
I hope this works as the muscle spasms are beyond intense and the muscle firings are a little alarming.
I appreciate your response. It gets fairly lonely when you know absolutely no one you know has any idea of what you are going through. I do not tell people what is going on with me, so I'm isolated from help other than this forum. The info I've gained here has been so comforting! Thanks!
Three and a half years ago I started with very painful leg cramps. Saw two family docs who had no idea of how to fix it. I saw my naturopath who ran urine organic acid tests. It turned out I had high lactic acid and pyruvic acid. She started me on Vitamin B50 complex and the cramps were gone in three days. I've always taken a multi-vitamin but these have much higher doses. The Vit B6 can cause sleep problems so I take them early in the day. I've had to stop taking them for various testings and the leg cramps are back in hours! I likely have some kind of metabolic disturbance causing the calcium problem and the cramps. Starting Mestinon hasn't seemed to make any difference in the cramps but really helps the muscle weakness and breathing troubles.
