Myasthenia gravis (MG) is a neuromuscular disease leading to fluctuating muscle weakness and fatiguability. The hallmark of myasthenia gravis is muscle weakness that increases during periods of activity and improves after periods of rest. I had knee replacement in March of 2012. In May of that year I was officially diagnosed with MG I think I had it earlier, but until double vision and ptosis I wasn't diagnosed.
So I had it before I started taking any medication for MG.
My advice: go the largest, highest reputation hospital in your area. Go where the person does knees by the 100s. My knee was complicated by severe injuries from a fall, and so I went to Mayo Clinic Rochester, MN where the surgeon who specialized in the difficult cases did my knee. It was very well done and 5 years later I really don't notice I have an artificial knee.
Dad (many years earlier) also had a knee done. He went to Mayo too and got excellent results. I find that surgery in the big institutions are no more expensive, and are done with every concern for good results, not at all the same as a friend of mine who did it at a small local hospital where the knee surgeon comes in once a week.
Another advantage, the folks at a large hospital are knowledgeable about doing surgery on folks with MG whereas in a smaller place they are unlikely to know anymore than they can find on google!
My new knee is wonderful.
Good Luck Russ
I found it handy to keep bananas near my meds so would take a banana with my meds to help my stomach. It was best not to wait till the pain set in before taking my pain meds as otherwise it was difficult to get control of the pain again. Keep on top of it. Another thing, do your exercises faithfully so you can get as much of your flexibility back as you can. So important. Good luck!
