Myasthenia Gravis Support Group
Myasthenia gravis (MG) is a neuromuscular disease leading to fluctuating muscle weakness and fatiguability. The hallmark of myasthenia gravis is muscle weakness that increases during periods of activity and improves after periods of rest. Although myasthenia gravis may affect any voluntary muscle, muscles that control eye and eyelid movement, facial expression, and...
sorry for the long message. hope you feel better without the Hic! Hic!
It seems for us the body is now "over sensitized" having MG and kind of "over reacts" to anything we put in it. It could be possible that besides alcohol content, wine affect us more than say beer because of it being more acidic. That could have an effect on Mestinon. When I drank wine, I didn't like it as much as beer (never have), and I believe I did get more red and irritated etc...When I drink, I am careful. I have been out drinking at a bar/restaurant and at home. I have had a beer when eating and about with no problems. I just cannot drive drunk and I know my limits for that and stick to it unless home and no worries.
Usually anywhere from 1-3 beers is plenty for me. (Water in between helps out even more I think) I haven't had a hard alcohol drink since MG onset. It took me well over a year after onset before I even drank a beer. I don't drink the cheap stuff either. I am finding Newcastle Beer goes down very nicely for me. So does Guinness and Heineken beer.
All things considered, beer is fine with me, just rendering me with some slight exacerbation at times like the doubled vision mentioned by Tristyn. It passes...
Enjoy!
I believe this is what I'm suffering from for a couple different reasons. I started noticing fatigue in my eyes in the afternoon last year at the beginning of the summer. This was followed by increased exhaustion after exercising that has now forced me to stop most of what I was doing. My Dad had to have open heart surgery at the end of the summer and I was having trouble getting a deep breathe periodically when I was dealing with anything concerning the surgery and chalked it up to stress about it and sympathy pains, kind of like how a husband may feel when his wife is pregnant. Fast forward to this summer and I am now on sick leave due to many more symptoms including worsening of breathing, double vision that seems to disappear when I only look through one eye at a time, throat muscles become sore as well as inside of my throat and I start to lose my voice if I'm talking more than usual, or am under stress and crying. The reason I am wondering if this is what's causing the issues is since my early 20's I had this funny symptom when I drank. My left eyelid is almost impossible to keep open more than a quarter of the way and it's a symptom that has gotten worse over the years. I have started to notice over the last couple of years that this happens when I'm very tired.. while not as severe as when drinking. I wonder if anyone here noticed very early signs such as this before having signs that it's gotten bad enough to need treatment?
Sorry this is so long....I'm just becoming frustrated with my Drs who can't find anything on tests and keep asking if I am depressed or suggesting it's fibromyalgia and it's starting to take its toll on me.
Any info or personal experiences are greatly appreciated!
