Rollling Stone magazine made a list in 2003. It can be seen online here. Jimi Hendrix tops their list. I think they are only covering R&R/R&B virtuosos, and give extra credit for influence and innovation. Most of my favorites are down in their 10-20 range, John McLaughlin barely squeaked into to the top 50. Joni Mitchell is only 72 on the list, so I don't entirely agree with them, and probably no-one else will either, but for different reasons. Nevertheless, it was very educational. Maybe I was sleeping, but I didn't see Pat Metheny on the list, which would tell me that there may be entire universes of guitarists out there that Rolling Stone can't see. Peace.
