Seeing those with mobility issues has given me a greater appreciation for the mobility I have, even when I have bad days, and the floor hates me, the corners go out of their way to meet me and my bed is my drug and the alarm clock is the cop.
I won't say I don't have bad days where the only thing I'm positive is it sucks because I do.
I've also learnered that while I love helping others that sometimes I have to swallow my pride and ask for help. It's also shown me who my friends are and how blessed I actually am to have such a strong support group.
It's so hard to realize that nothing substantial will become available, to make any real difference in my lifetime.
EVERYTHING I do takes me 10 times longer than it did just 5 years ago. MS has affected EVERY relationship I have, even that with myself!
I can totally relate to the person that stated it's like being imprisoned with no chance of parole. I call MS a THIEF that has stolen what use to be "ME", which was my life. To constantly struggle each moment, every day with no relief is hardly something that resembles a "quality of life"........and yet........I persist. Lack of mobility brings it's own problems, like un-needed/wanted weight gain & a lack of circulation. One thing compounds the next.
In spite of all..........I am thankful that although my vision is challenged, I CAN still SEE! I'm also thankful for a partner & family that love me.
Sure, it can always be worse, but the reality exists where I/we are at right now! Just so very tired.........so tired.
Countless times when I've been asked "how am I"? I've found myself saying....."I'm here". Often it's the most truthful response I can give!
It would be great to say otherwise, but it would be dishonest & this IS something I can still do........be truthful!
So, I can totally relate, Xfireman.
That was a big question! I could go on, and on, and on....
Stand for long periods of time
Run and jog
Go shopping for long periods of time without conking out
Play tennis
Take long walks
Probably due to Avonex I have remained stable over the years and have maintained my independence. Can still take short walks when well rested and can clean house but with some difficulty.
I lost the weight. A whole 63 lbs. I went from wearing a 3x to wearing a medium; I could borrow my daughter's clothes, if I wanted to, like in that cereal commercial. I walked my dog, or walked in general, a minimum of a mile a day; so much so that the dog (a miniature schnauzer) would be exhausted upon return and I'd still have energy to run to the grocery or mall before the kids got home from school.
MS, so far though I've only just been diagnosed within the last 2 weeks after a hospital stay, has taken away my ability to walk my mile... to keep that precious weight I lost off. I gave away all my 3x clothes and I don't want them back.
So what I have learned is to actively seek joy daily, regardless of the circumstances, accept help with grace, trust God, be less controlling, more grateful for the small things, and be more loving my husband and family. Joy and love has become a choice for me. Some days are harder than others, but I have learned it is possible.
