Sorry for another one...chronic eyelid closure?
irishrooster
Sorry guys,
Not trying to monopolize. I am doing an experiment tonight by staying up all night to check out the problem with my eyelid closures. See how much I like research!
Heres the deal. My left eyelid (yes left side just like everything else) has been staying closed in the mornings after I awaken. This has been going on for about 2 years. I went to my opthalmologist when it first started happening and he told me it was probably crust and scale from just waking up since it only lasted a few minutes. He also said the muscle could just be weak. He gave me some Occusoft eyelid cleaners and I have used them quite a bit over the years. Tonight I cleaned my eyelids very thoroughly and then began my all night fun.
I went to see my eye doc again yesterday because my eyelid is now staying shut for well over an hour in the AM and when I am tired it shuts again and just stays put. Right this very minute I am trying very hard to force it open with mind control and am getting a headache above that eye due to it. The right one flutters and shuts sometimes but mostly it will stay open. Get this....when my eyelid started closing while I was looking at the computer I realized that I had been automatically just closing it and trying to read with my other eye. I also used another steriwipe and cleansed both eyes very well. My left eyelid open a little bit and then dropped right down.
Anyway, the good news is I finally got the courage to set things in motion. I saw my eye doc who said he was stumped about my eyelid. He wasnt pleased with the way my left eye followed a pen and said my visual field test for the left eye was not great. He said I should see a neurologist. My PCP also want me to see an neuro due to left side weakness and slow left relexes and an apparent bad seizure I had and several small ones. I didnt know they were seizures I just thought they were little weird things that happen to all people at same===I just put dry eye drops in my eye it and it opened halfway for a minute and then cloisedsompleely again. Now my check is getting very numb and of course the piggies are doing their dance again. Is being tired a bad thing for appearance of symptoms/signs?
Thanx anyone who listens and answers! Irish

Usually I get a daily influx of emails on health topics. An article from Dr. Mercola really stood out recently though because it mentioned that fat cells have their own mitochondria. Not only was this the first I'd heard of this, he also mentioned that fat serves a purpose in our metabolism. Another new factoid for me. The bottom line for me was to appreciate that even our fat cells play a...

I just do not feel well and I really think that it's because I cried yesterday on my way to work about my Aunt who is in the hospital. I don't think that we will have her much longer. She is very frail. Now she needs help eating. So, this is the third time in a year that I felt this way after crying. I think crying releases toxins into my body. I also worked up a sweat at the gym...

Surely you've got an overactive and an underactive reflex going on. Magnesium might help with the toe situation. It helped me with the calve spasticity. The eyelid problem sounds like something different though - and should be regarded with a little more care by that optha if you ask me.
You have a great spirit and sense of humor. Your doctors are blessed to have a patient like you.
Hope you get to the bottom of these so you can enjoy waking up in the morning and seeing without having to coach your eyelids open - and I hope you find that magnesium helps with the toe muscles. I'll be watching to see what our DS famiy thinks. :)
My Mom (who had another autoimmune disease-not MS) started having drooping eyelid problems in her 70's. She had eyesight problems but this was new. It did turn out to be a neurological problem. I think a trip to a neuro-opthalmologist would be a wise idea. They have the most specific training in neuro/opthal issues.
Keep smilng!
Melanie
I had 4 Dr's at the neuro-opthomologists looking at my eye as the nerve issue & one pupil is smaller than the other & wasn't moving or responsive.
I have ended up having botox injections every 3 months & that works well for me but doesnt last the whole time. It does give me relief. Need a lot of tests done but do insist on getting it tested with all the eye tests & the photos of the lenses with eye drops that expand the pupil & help them see what's going on with the eye too.
Hope this helps. In the meantime I was told when it gets tired/closes to put a tissue over it (I wear glasses) for about 1 hour to give it a rest.
Take care
******Lorrie, Yeah believe me I know what you mean about my eye doc and the way he dismissed this thing awhile back. Since I have always had chronic Blepharitis I just figured he was right. But then even he could not disregard it this time because it was actually closing on him when he was doing tests. He kept asking me if I was tired. I just said "nope". Thank you so much for saying my doctors are blessed to have a patient like me. They would probably not agree with you though! I try to be humorous about most everything in life because the alternatives are just not so great. My cousin Tommy taught me that. He is the funniest guy I know but usually I am the only one that laughs at his jokes because other people just expect in your face humor and he is so subtle. I bet you would laugh at his jokes though! Anyway, I am going to give the Magnesium a try. I have some here already cuz a friend of mine (my hair dresser) said it is good for sleep. So I will see how it does for my little dancing princesses!
******Melanie, Thank you also for your comment about my sense of humor. I used to be so shy and never ever said anything funny to anyone. But my thoughts were always lightening quick with funny things to say or good comebacks. I just never said them because in elementary I was picked on a lot and I remember once trying to say something funny since it seemed like the funny people had lotsa friends. Well the girls all just stared at me and the big bully one told me I was a "nerd" and not funny at all. Will that did for me till the age of 35 (10 years ago) when being married to such a supportive man helped me overcome all that rubbish of my youth.
Thank you for sharing the story about your mom. It really got me thinking and I did some research tonight on my Kindle (weekend and boys on the computer till late! :-X ) and I found out that there is a eyelid problem that is connected to paresis and dystonia and it is called "Blepharospasms" and it does sound exactly like what is going on with me. It does give botox injections as a treatment just like AusSue mentioned in her post. Im kinda scared of them though because I heard if you do not keep your self perfectly still that it could really mess up the way you look. Have to talk with AusSue bout that. My eyedoc did mention that he would like me to see one of his friends who specializes in eyelids. Personally I thought that was a little to weird for me. I mean what kind of person would want to specialize in "eyelids"? Pretty freaky huh? I saw this scary movie once where the guy was an undertaker in the past and he was involved in the occult somehow so he would cut off all the dead peoples eyelids and keep them in a box (supposedly so they would 'have their eyes open' when some kinda horrific thing happened to them) and anyone this little kid found the box with the old leathery eyelids. It was so freaky scary that I actually had nightmares about it for awhile. So....an eyelid specialist, ...well...no thank you, maybe some other time! HOWEVER, a neuro-optho doc sounds pretty good to me. I will call my eye doc and see if that is what he meant (I sure hope so!!!!..... Q (thats me with my eyes forced shut but still enjoying my after supper cigarette!)
******AusSue, So there is another living breathing soul who knows what I am talking about because she is suffering the same thing! Hallejuia! I was reading up on the prognosis of this rather rare disorder and it said that it was really more bothersome than anything and that it did affect people emotionally and mentally. Many people become agoraphobic because they are afraid their eyelid will shut when they are out. Thats why they like to do they botox and a few other treatments as often as possible. Depression is sometimes a big factor. It actually has something t o do with the "basal ganglia" part of the brain. If you look at a pix of the brain it is the part that is at the back bottom of the frontal lobe. That area has a lot to do with body movements. Plus I looked further into it and it could fall under "dystonia" since like my dancing princess piggies the lid does move of its own accord and will not listen to your mind commands. The research said also to stay away from bright sun and to always wear sunglasses. And try not to wear much eye makeup. Thats really weird because I remember my eye doc telling me the same exact advice when I was 17. My mom cant remember what was wrong with my eyes and I sure cant. Maybe the beginning of this, who knows. I wear glasses also to read. I can tell you this, the computer kills my eyes so we are getting a screen for it and I love to read. Well I really do not mind reading with only one eye. Im actually getting used to it.
HEY YOU GUYS!!!! Have yall seen the new "dish" commercial and it talks about why you should get rid of "cable". The guy is wearing a eyepatch on the bus and some tough guys in the bag figure hes wearing an eye patch he must be tough, therefore they decide to chase him down and beat him up and leave him laying in a ditch. Then it shows him getting up and the announcer says, "Dont wake up in a ditch". The idea of course that buying a dish and getting rid of cable will keep you out of fights with toughies and you wont end up in a ditch. Will I dont know about that but did yall ever see KillBill Vol.1 and Vol.2? Well remember the long blonde hair chick? The one who killed Bill's brother with that black mambo snake in his trailer? Well, I thought she looked pretty cool with her black "tough looking" eye patch. So way I figure it, if my eyelid becomes permanently disabled I will make me up some really cool looking eye patches ---- you know some real gothy and emo ones and a few disco, funk and punk ones. My hairdresser friend wants me to make some steampunk ones! I would even make cutsey ones for when I am around a lot of kids! WOW...something to look forward too, right?
In regard to reading the computer - enlarge the font, that makes all the difference to reading it comfortable. An alternative is to buy a magnifying sheet & put that on the screen, they are usually cheap.
They did mention dystonia to me too but I am sure hoping its not that & so are my Dr's. They have done the basic tests & not that.
Its more nerve damage from when I have had optic neuritis.
The Botox stings when it is done but not real painful depending how much they do. It is more a bit later that it hurts & the eyelids sometimes go red afterwards but a low dose cortisone cream works wonders for that. It is a relief within a week & lasts about 3 months for me but varies for each person & how much they put in too. I am lucky I don't bruise, apparently some people do.
Keep the humour & research up but not to much research as it can be scary too.
Thanks for your reply! Only time I have to respond is late at night. So my eyes are pretty yucky right now, my left eye is completely closed and the right one is at half mast. Being tired I suppose. I did put in my dry eye drops and scrubbed my lids with the lid scrubber pads. Doesnt seem to help much. does help with the pain a bit...for maybe an hour if I am lucky!
So from your response I take it that you do have the same problem? Does one eye close and stay closed for a long time? Please let me know if I got that right. Botox kinda freaks me out because of all the horror stories I have heard.
Thanks also for the info about my computer. I have seen the filter screens, well they are like privacy screens so people really cant see what you are putting into the computer. doctors offices have them. It is the glare of our large screen that gets me. Its like having your eyes dilated and then walking outside with the blaring sun and not having sunglasses on. The large type is a really good idea. Im gonna check on the magnifying screeen also.I hate to give up my eye makeup completely but my eye doc when I was 17 did say I should never wear eye makeup. He also said I should always wear sunglasses. I kinda blew all that advice off. I was 17 and wanted to look "hot" know what I mean? Well Im 45 now so I guess things change. BTW, sorry for any typos my tremor in my hands is really bad tonight. About the research, you are right, Last night I put in some of my symptoms andit said it could be Huntingtons disease. That is fatal. So I really got scared for the first time. Almost all the symptoms matchrf mine, except fpr ,my tremor, Huntingtons only have the resting tremor and mine is almost exclusively intention tremor. Yeah!!! :-D Thanks for all the advice I really appreciate it. Irish
You should DEFINITELY make yourself an eye patch so you can read better! I do like the idea of a girly skull patch...there are just soooo many ways to be creative about doing it too! If I were you I would just draw it out so you have an idea of what you want and then just grab some art supplies and go to town on it! You know you could probably use any kind of material if you wanted. You don't have to buy one of the plain ole black ones. You could get some really soft material and work with it so that it lets air in comfortably so you don't feel all sweaty in that eye area. If you went to the fabric store I bet you could come up with all kind of cool ideas. Just forget the glitter! I had thought it would be so fun to put glitter on all kinds of different eye patches to match my moods. But after thinking it through I realized that getting glitter in my eye would not be a fun feeling! Then that would take the fun out of my trying to be fun! Does that make sense? Sometimes I confuse myself!
I am so happy that I am able to make you and some of the folks here smile. It gives me so much pleasure to make people smile and laugh. I just wish that I could have opened up with my sense of humor years ago instead of being shy about it. Maybe God gave it to me as a gift and I surely do treasure anything that comes from Him. He works in truly weird ways. Just think if I didnt get my courage up to finally come on here and ask questions I would never have met all you wonderful friends. I am really glad that has happened. If I end up with MS and you know even if I dont maybe we will meet someday at a MS sponsored thing. That would be neat huh!!! Keep up your spirits matey!!! Your a lot better looking than Johnny Dep and we ALL know what a cutie he IS!!! p (heres your little pirate guy...kinda strange looking....I'll keep working on it....little p is the eye patch and option and x is the little goatee) P~> (this one looks better!!! My husband thought of the other one...he is such a minimalist!....this one is a big cap P, the big cap little swirly thing next to the number 1, then a less/greater symbol, then do "option and little 'x' " ) my husband just looked at it and declared it was "freaky looking". Oh well, what does he know!!!! Love ya!! Irish
