Hi Tammy, sorry you are dealing with the O.N..
If your dr. is ordering the Solumedrol, then that will likely help knock it down and out. Hopefully! I have dealt with O.N. on 2 occasions. Both times the dr.'s put me on the Solumedrol. Both times, it took a while, but the O.N. got better.

Just expect to realize that while you are on the Solumedrol, it will make things you eat or drink taste rather Metalic like. Keep some mints or gum or something hand. Both while you are getting the infusions as well as while you are resting.
When I was on the Solumedrol, I also felt like I was on a high caffeine jag. Didn't sleep much at all. But, others experience it differently. So, just be aware life could be a bit different for the time you are on the infusions! But, it should get a bit better after you are done with it!

Thanks to both of you. I've had IV steroids before but it's just to expensive-$750.00 a day:O So Last time I did it orally. You mix the Solumedral then put it in a drink. It's terrible & the taste it leaves in your mouth is worse then the IV treatment. I already had the Dr order the Valium so I can sleep.

To Sherizi, did you completely loose your sight or was it just fuzzy?

ON or inflammation of the optic nerve, is the most common visual disorder associated with MS. It's often the first symptom that people experience. With ON you can have any or all of the following problems:

1. Vision loss in one eye
2. Blind spots in the center of the visual field.
3. faded or washed out color vision
4. reduced contrast sensitiivy, which makes it difficult to see things that don't contrast sharply with their backround (like gray print on blue paper).
5. Pain behind the affected eye.
6, visual phenomena, such as flashes of light.
7. slowed response of the pupils to change in light.

There may be others, but this is all I know. Your symptoms are likely to worsen over the course of a few days or weeks an then gradually improve. A regime of high-dose, intravenous Solu-Medrol followed by several days of a tapering dose of oral steroids can speed your recovery.

ive had o p and i have double vision everyday..the o n was the first time an eye doc suggested i may have m.s.....sent me to nuero....i take prednisone daily but still have double and blurred vision...it plain sux...oops....i wear a patch alot..it helps totally....

Hang in there. My husband is an optometrist.... while IV Steroids can speed recovery, the oral Solumedrol will help too. Your vision should return in time, and it's based on amount of nerve damage that was done by the ON. Most times though, patients come in rather quickly because their eyesight is important, and they don't wait. ((HUGS)) to you!

ON was my first symptom. I've had it a number of times and my vision just gets really fuzzy, kind of like looking through a thin fog. I have only a small amount of damage. My color perception is off in my right eye. Hopefully the solumedrol will help and your vision will clear up soon.

Studies have shown that IVSM works better for Optic Neuritis that oral prednisone. Take care hope you're feeling better soon.
