Nerve damage

Lately my left hand has been intermittently numb and then very painful and then back to numb. It is extremely weak. THe pain is directly in the center of my palm, and my thumb is very sore, but the rheumatologist said the thumb joints are degraded. Could there be nerve damage from the MS? Could it be permanent? I am a transcriptionist, and I need to know if I need to start looking for a new line of work. I did ask about carpal tunnel, but she didn't think that was what it was. I forgot to ask her if it was nerve damage and if it was permanent. I will be seeing a neurologist in August.

Make sure you tell/ask the neurologist about the possibility of carpal tunnel. I have bi-lateral CTS, but the right hand gives me awful pain and numbness. My neuro in Florida had me tested for CTS, even though I told him I had it, I guess just to verify that is WAS NOT from the MS. Best of luck! Like just one of them doesn't suck enough on its own!

I do not think the nerve "pain" we experience can actually cause "damage". But, it can cause the pain you are having of course. I would also look for some kind of "joint" issue, or even a "stress fracture" This can cause that pain, and you do not have to incur an injury to get this. Good luck!

The rheumatologist did x-ray my bones. She said my wrists looked fine. My thumbs, lower back, hips, and smaller toes (poor little things...) had some "crumbling" but all of the other bones and joints looked okay. But that really doesn't rule out CTS since it involves the tendons, right? Or can x-rays now detect problems with the tendons, etc.? Gosh, the last thing I need right now is a carpal tunnel release. lol I'm struggling to keep my job as it is! I have no backup to take my place if I can't do it. I looked EVERYWHERE. Small town and all...

I am sorry, as do not know too much about that :( But, hopefully Neuro will have an idea, and if he doesn't, you may want to see either maybe a Pain Management Specialist or some sort of Orthepedic Surgeon or the like.. Oh, just saw your appt is not until August, yikes! Maybe you could check into one of those now if it gets too bad? I hope it starts to feel better!

Thanks for all of the advice! My rheumatologist did say I was low on Vitamin D and gave me a prescription, which I started right away. She said that will help some with the pain. Wish me luck! ~Jlynn

Best of luck to you Jlynne! I recently read alot about V-D, and the somewhat controversial? "dosage" issue. Seems they are finding that the RDA is way too low, but that has yet to be proven. There seems to be many positives to getting enough D, so I really hope it helps you!
