Hi all,
Wondering if someone could help me out with a few questions about legs I am on vacation this week at my in laws ranch with my husband and two sons. The farm house has two stories and two flights of stairs.
Yesterday I went with my mom to town. We left at 9:30 am and didn't get back till about 4:15.We never even stopped for lunch. So then my husband came to pick me up. We ended up having an argument right in front of my parents. I hate it when he acts all domineering in front of my parents because it really makes my mom mad cuz I never ever let guys treat me like that before. Its just easier and she just can't get that, coming from the "I am woman hear me roar"generation. Sorry, I digress.
So, I was suffering bad stress, my feet were killing me and I felt confused as to whether or not I was hungry. We get out to the ranch and my kids were all over me. So, you can imagine, it was mama this, mama that, mama mama mama!! I finally went up stairs to take a nap in the sun room. This is when I first noticed my legs problem. I had never had this issue with stairs before. I mean I have always climbed stairs weird. I don't put one foot in front of the other all the way up and down, I go right foot up, left foot join it, right foot up again and left foot join again and on and on. Like I never got out of the toddler stage of learning to climb stairs.
On my way up I noticed that I was having a pretty hard time of just pulling my left leg up to join my leading right leg. Many times as I was levying my left leg up my toes would hit the step itself instead of clearing its way to the step. I became conscious of this and tried hard to correct it. It worked a few times and many times it didn't.
Also as the night wore on and I became used to this I began to notice another disturbing problem. My legs, especially my left (same ole trouble making left side) were actually shaking as I went up and down the stairs. This scared me and I held tight to the solid wooden railing because I was afraid one of my legs would give out under me. I was actually very frightened of this possibility. Even though I was once able to run up and down this same stairs chasing after my sons.
That night in bed my muscles in my lower legs kept spasmimg. I would put my hands on my legs and feel the muscles contracting without any command from my mind. This was not very painful but a slight pain and a big annoyance.
Has anyone experienced these leg issues? What are they actually? Do you think the over doing it with my mom or the stress from my fight with with my husband could have brought on this random strange stuff with my legs? Or is it just part and parcel of the MS!!??
Please anyone who knows help me me with some answers or ideas. My hands are also shaking really bad today also, not to mention the constant pain of my eyes! Please help!!...irish

I talked with my husband about your question, he has m.s. He says he has had this happen to him a few times, but not often. He has noticed it, like you, going up or also down stairs. His hand does the "shaking" or spasming also a lot, and he cannot control it either. His hand or leg will literally shake, like you mentioned. He also says that obviously if you were very active, using your muscles a lot on a particular day, that can cause them to do that as well. So, it could be either...the m.s. also due to the stress of your day, or it could be just because you were up and running all day. Hard to say, but I thought I'd let you know that he has experienced both scenarios, the m.s. shaking and just overworked muscles. :)
Feel better soon, Alma
The shaking is from the muscles being very tired and weak.
My OT I had when I was at home told me I have a limited amount of energy if I go over I end up with symptoms.
I was told when I came into the long term hospital that I sped up how bad I got from over doing it for yrs I wish I knew then what I do now
you need to take care of yourself make sure you take time to eat and rest during the day.
Try not to over do it.
Finding out what your limits are and not exceeding them will in the long term let you do more & have less bad days
also take time to do stress relief what ever that works for you
Sending Hugs you way
The leg spasms seem worse at night for me especially if I overdid any walking not just stairs. If they are REALLY too jumpy and too achey I'll take cyclobenzaprine 10mg for a day or 3.
I know it's scarey when you feel your legs wobble, I'm sorry. I hope you find some help soon.
don't try so hard to do it all, enjoy yourself, your time away, your mum and dad, your husband and family. " turn the oven off" once and awhile..many hugs, connie
I just wanted to say thank you so much for your replies, advice and support. You will never know just how much all of you really mean to me. You are truly "my family". I do not receive a lot of support from my actual family because they are tired of the never-ending problems I have. Maybe if I were in their shoes I would understand their feelings but I doubt it. I would like to think that I would care about my family or friends always, especially when they are in almost constant pain and exhaustion.
you guys have given me a lot to think on. These days it is nice to have friends out there who can give me friendly supportand advice. I am so often exhausted and filled with anxiety and stress that it is hard to figure out what to do for myself. Thanks so much again. I will always try to be there for you as well! Irish
