Baclofen a muscle relaxer can have those sort of effects due to withdrawals which many doctors do not realize.
Have been battling with terrible nightmares for months, finally bit the bullet and tried medical MJ, I have not had need for sleeping tablets since and the nightmares are basically gone.

Be sure to include any over-the-counter meds and nutritional supplements.
If nothing 'pops up', check with your neuro, or primary care doc for an antidepressant or anti-anxiety med.
I'd stay away from sleeping meds - they all have a long list of negative side effects.
