I figure they know I got it they've given me everything they don't need anymore.

I thought one at dx was enough but have been explained by neuro that the further mri's will help plot the progress (or not) of the disease.

My last mri showed that the brain lesions were 'inactive'

Just realised that I haven't answered your question - I have had 3 since dx in 2007.

I got diagnosed in January of 2012....I've had 4 MRIs with my 5 th one this Friday. I had a brain one, got a spinal, went into the hospital where I had another...6 months later I switched doctors so I had 1...so this is another follow up. Hoping not another one till next year!

I was getting one every three months. Now it is every 6 months. One lesion on my brainstem doesn't fit the pattern and the thought is that it might be a glioma. (slow growing, YEAH!!!!!)

I was dx almost 15 yrs ago. I had 2 in the beginning because I changed neuros. But the one I had until he retired in Dec didn't believe in unnecessary MRIs. So I didn't have one in 10 years until last fall when he thought that I might be having a relapse and then he ordered another one. But there was actually no change since the one I had over a decade ago.

So I guess it depends on your neuro. I have had 3 in 15 years and 2 were within 2 years. After that, it was another 10 years. I am satisfied for another 10 years. It might depend on the course of your disease. Mine has been fairly stable so that might explain the few. Also, my doc was nice in that he didn't believe in unnecessary expenses. Those costs add up, you know. I am grateful that they were few and far between.

My MRIs were all of the head only.

After rereading the posts, I see a pattern of the docs ordering them frequently. My neuro didn't believe in having them often. Perhaps he was experienced in MS and didn't need the tests. They are basically for the doctor and you are paying for them. Remember, you have a say so in them. Don't waste your money if you think that they are ordering them too frequently. It is silly unless they are changing your medication and you are having a lot of relapses.

It depends on diagnosis (RRMS vs PPMS), symptoms / # relapses, etc.

Another option is to look into 5 min OCT scan of optic nerve via ophthalmologist. It has no neurotoxic dyes and is much cheaper couple hundred dollars vs a few thousand) than an MRI. It does not mean you don't ever get an MRI but you can get them less often and use OCT in between.

It is just an option you can discuss with qualified medical professional. If you need some research on the topic I could dig it up.

During the process of being diagnosed in 2010 I had 3 MRI's.
In 2011 I had two and last year I had one. I made the trip to my Neuro today for my six month visit and after I told him of the new symptoms I've been experiencing he thought I should have one done sometime this summer before my next visit.

I think he wants to make sure my meds are doing their job, see if it is all still in my head or if I have more lesions near my spine. He said if I didn't have any new symptoms he wouldn't think I should have one.

The first few MRi's were spendy and it seemed I'd just get one paid off and it was time to charge another. I joined MSAA and they've been very helpful. They even helped pay for the one I had last year. All I had to do was go to a provider who was on their list.

Make sure to get cd's copied of the scans and radiology reports for your records. I had to go to Boise to have my last one done and the radiologist was thankful to have my old ones to compare to.

Annual MRI unless things change and one is needed sooner than that.

Just a few at the beginning (to confirm diagnosis) but seeing as it is progressive I suppose, I haven't had any more (I was dxed in 2009, and they only found lesions in brain).
