At least that is my understanding.
This is from NMSS: "Life expectancy for people with MS has increased over time. We believe this is due to treatment breakthroughs, improved healthcare and life style changes. Recent research however, indicates that people with MS may live an average of about seven years less than the general population because of disease complications or other medical conditions. In some rare instances, there are cases of MS that progress rapidly from disease onset and can be fatal."
This from healthline: "According to the Multiple Sclerosis Association of America, a small number of people may have a particularly rapidly progressing form of MS that can cause severe health issues early on. Severe disability can, in rare cases, lead to premature death from infections or pneumonia. In most cases, however, MS is not a fatal condition."
If you are truly worried, speak to your doctor!
It's been on my mind that if it were not for having the MS one would not have had the said complications that a person dies from.
I say Yes it can and it does and it has.
As a R.N I have seen every patient/client pass away from M.S. I've only had one client that lived with M.S for several years but she ended up physically unable to do anything. As M.S progress your body will slowly degenerate (weak muscles, energy level goes down, difficulty of breathing, etc). Some faster than others.
I will admit as a nurse I see things differently because I see these things happen every working day. Yes, there is medications, therapies, and other things available that wasn't available a decade ago but the truth is yes, you can die from M.S.
I've read that it shortens one's life by about 10% of the median age of both parents so if one lived to be 75 and the 0ther 77, the mean is 76 meaning your life would be 7.6 years less than your mean age of 76 so 69.4 in other words. This is ok with me really. I mean seriously, who wants to live to be real old with a problem like this especially if you have no family that seems to care and few friends it seems.
So, we go on anyway best we can eh?
