i would talk to your doc..if its sounding like a flare issue....
The reality about falls is once you have an injury it 1. can trigger a flare and 2. Can set you way back in terms of mobility and strength.
It would be very important to see your doctor about this asap.
Also as a PT once told me - every fall is a shock to your spine. Sooner or later those shocks are going to do damage.
Be safe,
Melanie
Balance is always poor with MS. One of the best things that I find to help, is my quad cane, as it adds to stability & helps balance. That way I can walk around instead of just sit.
I walk with my feet further apart to give me more balance. My boyfriend knows not to park with me next to a curb - it's not wide enough between the car and the curb for me to be stable.
I am resisting using a cane, but I see one in my future.
I worked for 33 years in construction and got in habit of watching where I was walking. That helped most of the time, but not always. Now with having MS, DropFoot, and just getting older, I have to think ahead and think about "What if I fall". Things I could fall on, things I could balance with, etc. I also have a AFO that I wear, to help with DropFoot of my Left Foot. Within last 8 or 9 Months I have started using a power wheelchair. I still have to get out of it for toilet and restroom when we go places. I have even fallen in restrooms in public places. Very embarrasing. And not every place has "HC" assessible rest rooms. Time to write comment card or better yet "Let the manager know".
Anyway, I have gone from Cane(not needed all the time) to walker, to wheel chair, to power wheelchair. There are still those short times when falling is a possibility. But looking and thinking about what might or could happen could help ease your mind. When people ask me about not getting hurt when I fall, one of my answers is "Relax if you can, same way with drunks in wrecks. They don't know whats going on, but the person who does tenses up and suffers the worst". Yes, check with your doctor or Physical Therapist. Another thing I just got through insurance is a Hoyer Lift. This helps me transfer from bed to chair, and also could help my wife or someone else get me off the floor if needed. I have it in picture on my profile. Best of luck.
My physio has told me that you don't actually need to fall for it to be counted as a fall. What she means is that a stumble is a fall.
I think that the number of falls you have had is certainly worrying. I have got afo on both legs now & I use a walker in the house.
I would be very concerned with the number of falls & to start with use the cane all the time without fail.
Then I would call your Dr/Neuro or physiotherapist & get assessed for a walker. One warning, dont go for those stupid 3 wheel walkers they are dangerous to use & most ms people need the one's with the lock down breaks not the weight/push down breaks that work if you put weight through the walker you break - couldn't manage that at all as tend to put weight through the handles as I walk.
Don't be afraid to use a walker if that is what makes you safer & thats what it needs then. You can do serious damage to yourself with falls & even worse - what if there is no one there to help you when you fall, what will you do then?
Please take care & get an assessment as soon as you can too.
I am trying to get in to be seen by a new neuro, and as soon as I do, trust me, I will be mentioning the falls!
I was told by a p.t. nearly two years ago, that she felt I ought to be using a walker ...the type mentioned here, with braking handles, and also she said to get the kind with a seat, so I could rest while walking around.
I just hadn't go one, due to the cost. But, I think I am going to invest in one as soon as I can save up some $ to do so!
I truly appreciate all your comments here!
