Hey!!!

Have any of u heard of Estriol (sorry guys...I think its a drug for only ladies...so far) Are any of u on it??

I have heard numerous times that women when they are prego feel sooooooo good then when they have the baby they go threw a relapse. There have been studies done saying that the feeling good comes from estriol from the placenta. They are now making compounded estriol that u take orally. There are plenty of web sites (search for estriol and ms) that talk about the studies and they sound AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!! but trying to not get to excited. I just put in a call to my Neuro to see what he things...

I believe that there are indeed research studies going on about this. One theory is that the pregnancy temporarily alleviates the immune system, especially the auto-immune activity because of the 'foreign body" (baby). Also, so many new hormones are introduced into the body during pregnancy that are anti inflammatory. With delivery, those come to a screeching halt and indeed many women have an exacerbation. There is the thought that many women are not on therapy while pregnant, and that is why the exacerbation comes on.

A good way to look up true valid clinical studies (instead of some of those crazy theories that are out there) is to go to pubmed.gov or pubmedcentral.gov; then search under 'multiple sclerosis and ...' They have changed the interface so that it is not so intimidating.

My Nuro has a lot of hope for it.

I was recently diagnosed and put on Copaxone. My Nuro said not to worry about taking shots for the rest of my life and that she thinks there will be oral alternatives available to us in the next 5-10 years.

She is also very pro-pregnancy and said that her patients that have children do much better in the long run than those who do not.

Yes there are studies on this. Colleen Hayes at Univ of WI just did a hormone and vitamin D study. Plus a Rhonda Voskuhl, MD at UCLA is currently doing hormone studies with MS. Rhonda has actually done a few studies now with both testosterone in men with MS and estriol in women with MS. She and her coworkers have found SOME with MS did better when supplemented with these hormones. This is better than the meds that do not improve symptoms.

Per Utah Univ Physiology dept estriol is used as a transporter protein (kinda like a bus ) to bring nutrients into the body. By the way these homrones and myelin are made of fat.

    My 6mo twin DD's are EBF and just started rice cereal on the first. Everything has been going fine except this morning one of them had a diaper rash (lots of redness around her anus). I read this as one of the signs of an allergy. BUT I did just buy a different brand diaper yesterday (which they have used randomly before w/no issues). Do you think its the cereal or the diaper?
