I was dx at 45. I am 60 now and still walking and living on my own. It is hard at times. Try to take care of yourself as best you can.
Good luck.
walking is not good and when I sit for a while at a friends house and had to ask husband to help me up( I was high) Just what is next? Tried I thought I fixed that with energy drinks, not fully. When nice weather gets here, I hope to feel better. EVER GIVE UP right?
Hope you are feeling better...
I was diagnosed the same time as you (Amy), but am a couple of years older, so we are in similar boats. My mobility has been more than challenging me lately, but still fighting to stay working. I think a lot of those ideas for volunteering sound good, keeping it on a small scale. And yes, we are pretty young to already having to be worrying about early retirement or mobility issues, but I do feel less badly for myself remembering all of those years that I didn't have MS symptoms, or even really know was MS was!
What you have to look forward to is life! I suspect that most of us will live much longer than the average person, just because seeing doctors so often, other problems will not go unnoticed.
But here is my advice...You just have to find different ways of enjoying life. It's not like you can't enjoy life anymore....just gotta find a different way of doing it.
So I used to be very active...run, rock climb, was a medic (can't do that anymore)....of course the disease has slowed me down a lot so I've found interest in other things...I draw and paint now...even if it's not picasso it makes me happy. I find shows on tv i like and make them fun to watch by "saving" the episode for every week. I take my dog to dog parks a lot (often someone else plays with him and I watch and it makes me happy to see him having fun). I'll go see a funny movie by myself sometimes...other times I just have a good chat with someone.
I have to retrain for a whole different career so I'm in college now (which sucks because I miss being a medic so bad)...you should consider taking classes for recreation...maybe a pottery class or humanities class? What about learning a new language? Your community center might offer some classes. How about volunteering? Go to volunteermatch.org to find a great match in your area...you can even volunteer virtually (online).
I just want to tell you that you can still have a great life with MS. I know how you feel because it's a super rough disease that's so ruthless and the fatigue, pain, and other symptoms make it hard to get out and have fun...but you totally can! Just keep the following in mind:
1. Energy conservation: have fun without overdoing it because you'll be paying for it later
2. Make sure who you're hanging out with knows and respects your limits
3. Don't be so hard on yourself. Don't constantly compare yourself to what you used to do.
4. Find support! (Well that's why I joined DS today lol)
Good Luck! *hugs*
