I'm in college currently, im not sure that ive ever had an IEP for it though? why is it that you need one? i mean what are they?

An IEP is an Individual Learning Plan. Most of the time this is done for children in school who have been diagnosed with a learning disability.

Malian, perhaps your Doctor is either unsure what to do or is uncomfortable giving you documentation for an IEP. Because he has never done one or does not know what to do.

Contact your Dean of Education at your College and ask what kind of documentation that they require. Your Doctor may never have had to do this.

MS plays havoc on ones' cognitive abilities, so you might have to doing some explaining to your Dean.

An IEP is for a student in K-12 for college you'll need to get something along the lines of - documentation which includes your diagnosis, symptoms, tests that were done to diagnose you, interpretation of results, severity, expected duration of disability, brief history/prognosis for treatment, medications you are currently taking and any side effects, functional limitations - specifically how these affect your ability to perform learning tasks or functions required in the classroom environment and any accommodative recommendations.

If you are going to college in the United States you should contact the Disability Services office at your college or university to obtain accommodations and services for classes and testing.

Do you mean Individual Education plan? My son has Autism, is in High School and has to have IEP.

I had not heard of IEP before this. I just go to the Disability Services office. You will need to take some evidence of the condition. For me, I just took a copy of the paperwork my doctor signed for my driver license.

My first semester back, i did this. They gave me forms for the instructors to sign off on indicating any special consideration that might be needed. As I took the professors these forms, they just came out and asked me what they could do and I told them my only issue would most likely be needing a little grace for any tardiness since my mobility is the issue. They were very accommodating. This last time, I didn't even bother with it. I think I will do it again this time. It just seems the prudent thing to do. :)

I'm a counselor at a university in a disability services office. I work with students with a variety of disabilities. Students just out of high school often bring a copy of their IEP or 504 plan, however, we often request additional documentation since most IEP and 504 plans don't even include a diagnosis. For individuals who have been out of high school for a while most college disability service offices will have a form that you can have your doctor fill out to document your disability. For MS depending on how it affects the student there are many accommodations that we can provide at our university such as more time on tests, testing in a private room, note takers, readers, scribes, more time to get to classes, flexibility on assignment deadlines and test deadlines in case of a relapse, additional excused absences as long as it does not fundamentally alter the nature of the course. For example in a dance or acting course attendance is a requirement in the course so excessive absences would cause the student to fail the class whether they have a disability or not.
