I sure wish there was something anything that could lessen the flareups.
There is Tysabri which is a monthly infusion and the first of the oral drugs should be out later this year with many more following after that. So hang in there and don't stop looking because of bad effects from the current drugs that are available.
Plan to be on it forever as it is working so well for me.
I'm only one case but thought your qestion was an interesting one and hope this is useful at least as a comparison.

Think I am winning because I've been in remision for the last decade & have some symptom improvements. No pain, good energy & have found a way to sleep very well.
Plan involves very carefully controlled diet, exercise & several supplements. The only drug I take for MS is Ldn (very inexpensive.). As a fall project I've written everything out in a website. For anyone interested, google.ca, then enter MSalternativefix.com.
