I wouldn't tell them just yet. do your research to protect you and your job. Look into FMLA (family medical leave act) and treatments. You may be find to do your job and never have to tell them

I agree-do not say anything yet, get your ducks in a row first. Talk to your neurologist and find out what ms drug he wants to start you on if any.. Yes look into FMLA papers, not that you are going to need it right off the bat, but just protect yourself ya know. You may get over this hump with this MS Flare and be just fine for a long time. I would not tell my job or anyone at my job if I were you. I felt a responsibility to tell my job because of the symptoms and the line of work I was in (fire fighter). It was soon after they did find out that I was pushed around desk job to desk job until they finally said that they had nothing else for me. Lucky for me I had done my homework and left with disability and retirement. Had I been fired I would not have left with anything. You may get on a med that works well with you and not have a single problem for a long, long time, I hope that is the case and all works out well.

I too am male, and was log-in-the-tooth when diagnosed. Try to find a neurologist who specializes in MS. Some don't specialize. It is a complicated disease that needs the hand of experience and extra training. It is probably to late now but life insurance companies treat you like you have leprosy. The older you are with onset the more aggressive the disease. Whine about high dose steroids but don't refuse them. Just don't let your doc over-do them. They tend to screw up other stuff in your body. For me they wreck my veins all over, causing varicose veins. Learn all you can, ask questions and push for treatment. Prepare and learn how to fight with your insurance company. They may deny the latest and greatest for older cheaper treatment.

I am glad to hear about somone else getting symptoms in Europe also(not that symptoms are ever good). It is now three years since I have been back in the states. My brother lived in Germany and I went to live with him. I first remember seeing symptoms that I could not keep up with my brother and his wife in Amsterdam. My going to Europe has really helped with my moral I bet it is because it happened at the same time. I also agree with others that maybe you should not let to many people know yet, because once you tell someone, you can't take it back.

The first thing I would do this weekend is look for some of lchoppel posts about what to do like get the neuro to hold up the DX till you get some things in order like STD LTD life insurance I'm sure she will post to this, there are a lot of things you need to do to prepare and I would not tell tell anyone myself, heck they treat you like your diseased, or do people already know? One thing I do know about treatment is it will be what your health insurance will cover, than you and your dctor gets to pick from that list I called and found out what was cover'd before I went to the neuro and I was cover'd for 2 different ones and picked from there, the others are all step drugs,

I would wait to tell the people at work, too. It could be a long time before you have any visible signs. I first started the numbness in my hands in 2002. I rode my Harley 95,000 miles not knowing it was MS before I got diagnosed in 2009. Even today, you can't tell by looking at me that I have an MS dx until I get hot....

I did tell my supervisors and coworkers pretty quick, but everyone knew I was having problems with numbness in my hands and the nerve conduction study had ruled out carpal tunnel. Also, I had the MRIs at the hospital I work for and figured it was just a matter of time before someone found out. I have LTD insurance at work and figured if I got pulled off the road that I would file for disabiiity.
