Sorry to hear about your alter and yourself having a hard time...
Something like that happened to my alter a few years ago... She has become pretty cynical and rude... It's affecting my relationship with my boyfriend (to the point where he's wondering whether she could do with some affection and Prozac).
Usually, I try to give her some time by herself... If you can control your switches (we found that playing with dull edge of a knife makes us switch, so we use that, and it mostly works) make it so that she appears in a safe, but secluded place. She may even be able to tell you where she'd like to be, and you can decide whether it's safe.
If you trust her enough to be alone, that is. But trust is kind of something they deserve as much as we do, I've learned. Anyway, in my case what works is to let her do something she likes doing (she likes writing, so I give her a journal or some paper and I let her do her thing until she gets it out).
She's still Mrs. Grouchypants most of the time, but at least she isn't as wild as she used to be.
Hope this helps!
