Multiple Personalities Support Group
Dissociative identity disorder is a diagnosis described as the existence in an individual of two or more distinct identities or personalities, each with its own pattern of perceiving and interacting with the environment. At least two of these personalities are considered to routinely take control of the individual's behavior, and there is also some associated memory loss,...
it makes me angry to see things like sybil and the 3 faces of eve shown without a disclaimer that they are entertainment and not fact. there are many serious books on the subject, my favorite is by cameron west, 'first person plural.' it is the best description of did i have read in novel format to date. there are others that are equally good but not as well written.
please don't allow things like sybil and the 3 faces of eve scare you. if people behave that way they are probably psychotic and although someone maybe psychotic and have did it is uncommon.
at any rate it wasn't sensationalized,.it sounded like what happens in therapy and i'd recommend it.
I saw Cybil before I realized I had DID and the thought of it scared me enough to deny DID for quite a while. Now that I'm better informed, I'm glad to say Cybil is no more like a real person with DID than a Hollywood movie witch is like a real witch. (I should know, since I'm a witch.)
The best television show I've seen on DID is the one I posted about recently and someone added a link to it: "The Woman With 15 Personalities." Although I get annoyed that Dr Ross asks her to switch like it's a parlor trick, I can understand the need to show switching in a documentary. She also knew and was prepared to do that as part of documenting her condition.
If you like to read, I've got a few I can recommend to you. I found all of these at my city library. Free info is good!
*The Family Inside* written by a DID woman with the help of her two therapists.
*A Fractured Mind* written by a DID man about how he discovered he had DID in his middle age, and then following along with his treatment
*When Rabbit Howls* can be very triggering - use caution - but another account written by a woman and her alts, relating how repressed memories slowly came to the surface during therapy.
*Multiple Personality Disorder From the Inside Out* by Sidran Press. A compilation of drawings, short accounts, and poetry from many multiples on lots of subjects relating to DID. Easy to read if you like to read in small bites; each inclusion is no longer than 3 pages, but there are lots of them, so you get a good view of what multiplicity is like for lots of different people.
If you read any of these, please let me know what you think of them, and if they resonate for you.
