To my knowledge a professional psych only needs to be able to observe a clear difference between the core personality and an alter personality to identify the system as having Dissociative Identity Disorder.

I believe as long as there is noticeable distinction according to a clinical scale, yes, having one other alter still is defined as DID. Wheezie would know....Are you here?

most all people have disassiciation and MPD it is the human condition most in this world have grown up lacking,, I believe more gifted children cope differently than others,,,,
AuntTammie
The DSM criteria only requires two personalities (that includes the core). So, yes it is possible.

Spirit, most people do dissociate to some degree & most people have various aspects to their personalities, but most people do NOT have DID. Dissociation exists on a continuum, with things like day dreaming & spacing out while driving (thus not remembering the drive) on one end of the continuum, and DID on the other.

from what I remember of treatment , there is a contiunuun some people with a few alters and some more how ever humans disasociate daily driving daydreaming but they dont lose massive time and come back to core, DID takes on a continuum no one person experiences the same , there are people who live their life functioning with no breakdowns and are not typical I would suggest get ideas from reading oosts and others experience but do your own professional connection ,NO one has all the answers we are all different , it depends on age at onset your trauma history support system, etc, if you cant find DID therapist those trained in trauma are excellent resources and on the net today with this becoming more and more prevalent there is a plethera of info but would caution not to overwhelm , what is about you may not be for another you are unique and your experiences are that all we in here can do is relate and share we are not pros,,, we share experience strength and hope,, good luck warrio

in response to Aunt Timme after working diligently on this for yeeas in the best treatment i could get,, of course I do not thing everyone has flull blown DID or any diagnosis just opinion being an educator and seeing much disassociation , in many of my students esp with bad home situation,,,, it is the human condition , I dont assume or give advice but I do know it is very common to disassociate that is what grief tells our brain to do,, whethere an ongoing form of ptsd or other disociative only can be determined by a therapist I have witnessed my former mates in treatment make amazing progress this is highly treatable with proper therapy and support , dont believe we stay in our pain unless we want to stay stuck,, again an observation and opiniion
