one thing you might want to do is go to a library or bookstore and look at some books that have info about PTSD.. one resource is the PTSD Source Book. read up on some techniques to help you deal with anxiety or panic attacks.pick a "tool" that sounds like it might work for you. practice calming yourself down using whatever technique you feel comfortable with. thi s will take some time and practice.
once you feel like you know ways to safely calm yourself or comfort yourself then join a group like 12 said, or find a mental health place that has AA type meetings.
sometimes the scariest thing is the scared. being scared freaks your BODY out. makes you tense, agitated, hot, shaky...that makes your mental side even more anxious. if you can find a way to help your body slow down it will be a little easier to approach a group or doc.
hang in there
when you are in extreme panic or hyper nervousness, try one of these. if it works, go back to it in the future, or try another as well
first is TIP
T = Temperature. lower your body temperature. splash your face with cool water, put ice in your hands, use a cold cloth on your neck etc. Your body heats up when you are upset, so get it back to a normal place and it helps you calm down.
I = Intense physicality. If you are worked up, get physical. Workout really hard, or go for a walk, or rearrange your furniture. Getting your body involved seems to take the mind off what you are freaking over and the body works together towards the physical goal of dancing the samba, or whatever. Plus it boosts endorphins which help with happiness and calming
P = Paced breathing. Deep breaths in AND out. Sometimes people do more of the deep in and not deep out which can make you hyperventilate, so deep both ways. Slows you down and slows your body as well. Like if a kid is freaking out, this helps bring you back down to a regular breathing and should calm you a bit.
! distract yourself ! or
! calm yourself !
distract yourself by the working out, or helping someone in need, or jumping into a thoughtless project like cleaning out your garage, or going out and volunteering somewhere. get out and do something that keeps you busy until you can settle down enough to process whatever yiu are going through.
OR
calm yourself down . through the temp control or breathing. or focus on one thing at a time, like counting tiles in your ceiling or comforting yourself with something soft. you just need to try to get down from the high strung hum, because that panic is so hard to deal with. take a bath or get the punching bag. or list off all the movies you have ever seen, just try to get your brain elsewhere and your body calmed.
please let me know if any of this helps!!!
