I got Mrsa on my thumb in July 2010. I've went to 6 doctors. 1st- put me on sulfer meds and mupirocin cream. 2 days later, the pain was so extreme I passed out and went to the ER. They gave me a tetanus . Then gave me a thumb block and lanced my thumb. According to my ER record, 4 cc(almost a tsp) of tenacious and purulent material was expressed. After using forceps to pop blisters, more fluid was expressed. No culture was taken. They did xrays which showed soft tissue swelling and no sign of osteomyelitis. They took me off the sulfer and changed it to Augmentin. 10 days later I went to family doc. He was concerned because my skin had turned black. He took a culture and found it was moderate MRSA. He changed my meds to vancomycin to told me to soak it in peroxide and come back. Every other day he took more dead skin off, 3 apts. The 4th apt he told me he was concerned that he would damage my thumb and sent me to an Ortho Surgeon. Before I left he told me that I was not out of the woods yet. 1st apt at Ortho he looked at it, but didn't touch it. He told me to leave it uncovered and let it dry. Put me on another round of Vancomycin and told me to come back in 2 weeks. I asked his nurse about xrays, and he said none were needed. 2nd apt. he told me I could go back to work, my job is watressing and I told him I was concerned about it still draining and the fact I couldn't even tie me shoe. It hurt bad. Told me to 2 weeks. Never did touch it or really look at it. Before the two weeks was up, I called my family doc and wanted a diff doc. He told me to go back to same doc. Next apt he came in and said he needed to do surgery. 2 days later he removed a core the width of a pencil and told me it was to my bone. Not in my bone. Called him 3 days later and told him it was still draining. He told me to take my antibiodics. His nurse checked my culture he took and I still had MRSA growing, but was on the wrong meds.Now Cipro. 10 Days later rechecked and told me I was better. I asked for blood work and an xray. He said I didn't need it. Asked for a Infection doc and told me it wouldn't do any good. 5 days his nurse got me apt. Doc did blood work and MRI. That showed that either the doc took out some of my bone or erosive oastomyelitis. And celluitis. He called ortho and he told him he scraped my bone.Infect doc said I will prob need more surgery. Had to go back to ortho, but he was out of town and didn't think I should wait. I saw his partner. He did xrays and said some of my bone was gone on my fingertip. He didn't work on my tip in surgery. Told me I was better and mocked me when I told him I still feel it. I have black, blue, and red colored tip with pain and contracting feeling on tip. Family doc said I was well, also. I have an apt in a diff city Mon with a hand surgeon. I have all my records and xrays. Comparing them, my bone has eroded. Should I insist on a culture of the bone. Will I lose the part infected? Should I sue the ortho for neglect? 4 months off work, my credit shot, and lots of doc bills.Not to mention depression. This has gone too far. Advice please! Thanks!
