Staph infections are infections caused by the bacteria Staphylococcus. They include skin infections, pneumonia, blood poisoning, toxic shock syndrome, and food poisoning. Infection can happen through contact, especially if you have open wounds. Most infections are treatable with antibiotics. If you have been infected with staph, join the group for support and advice.
I just arrived home from the hospital last night, after having been admitted because of a huge abscess on my upper left inner thigh, which I'd thought was a spider bite. After being on several IV antibiotics (5 bags of 4 different antibiotics in just the first night, alone) and having undergone a battery of tests, including an MRI, blood work nearly every day, (I'm also a brittle diabetic, thus, I have a suppressed immune system.)
I waited in ER for nearly 24 hours before a room was found for me. Upon being taken upstairs, I was put in a room with a single bed (which I thought was odd), and only after a couple of days, was told I was in isolation, and that anyone coming into the room would have to gown up and have gloves on their hands. (I had previously had visitors who had not been doing so, as there was no notice on the door instructing them to do so,.)
While I had suspected I had MRSA, I really didnt think much of it. Then I got a diagnosis while in the hospital. I was very surprised that I was not screened (tested) for it during my original ER visit, back in September, 2011 for an abscess in my genital area (outside of a cyst on the side of my face a couple years ago, this was the FIRST abscess I'd ever had). The person who actually did the lancing, cleaning out, etc of that first abscess had told me that the cause was "the environment"; and I perceived that to mean that they were telling me that I was not a clean person. They had repeatedly asked if I had a place to stay (I can only assume they thought I was homeless, which I am not.)
Because of my perception of what I was told during the ER visit for my first abscess, I did NOT return there when I had another...and then another... and then another... etc. I began researching natural antibiotics, and treating myself with Olive Leaf Extract and Colloidal Silver, and eating LOTS of raw garlic, and onions. This helped, but as it seemed as if I'd get an abscess resolved, and would go as little as a week, before I'd have another. It seemed that the abscesses were bouncing back and forth between the sides of my genitalia.
I did not go back to the ER until I had what was thought to be a spider bite on my inner upper left thigh, that just got bigger and bigger. I was admitted to the hospital a week ago tomorrow, and operated on (was put under general anesthesiology) to remove the infection from my leg. By the time I went to the OR, the part of my leg that had become reddened was as big as my hand, the bump looked as if I had a small hill growing on my leg, with a black spot in the center about the size of a quarter (which I was told was dead tissue), and was presenting pain over much of the back of my thigh and into the lower portion of my butt.
Due to the IV antibiotics, I suffered diarrhea nearly every day during my hospital stay. It has irritated the surrounding skin, and left it raw (cant see it, but that's how it feels). Should this be a concern? I'm hoping I dont wind up with more abscesses in this area now.
Something else I'm concerned about is that the last time the attending Dr came to see me, right before being discharged, I was told that it stays on the skin for up to 6 months, after having asked him if it would ever go away. From what I've seen here, on this board, I cant say that I believe what the Dr told me. Can anyone help me out with this? DOES it ever go away?

I've never heard of it staying on the skin for 6 weeks. I had it 4 times in a 12 week period, but after the last bout, the skin cleared up except for some scaring it left. My doc told me it can "hide" in my nose and to be careful scratching after touching the inside of it. I was also told I am a carrier and have to be very careful with any break in my skin. That's kinda hard for me since I have eczema. I haven't had it in over 4 years. Just be careful.

Yes, the area/ skin can become colonized. Just becareful of cleaning the area.
