Is there really a difference between this so-called naturally compounded progesterone that you get from a bioidentical compounding facility versus the synthetic progesterone that drs. prescribe and you buy from a regular pharmacy?

I can't sort out, from what I've read online, if there really is a difference. Who to believe.

I had severe side effects from the synthetic progesterone suppositories that I took in the month of May (Prometrium). So I swore off progesterone after that.

But is there really a difference.....does anyone have good experience with natural progesterone?

Hi. I'm sorry to hear you've had bad experiences with synthetic progesterone. I know that having enough progesterone is essential to continue pregnancies to full-term. I use the Creighton Model with Naprotechnology of natural family planning, and from viewing my recorded results, my physician prescribes progesterone to me even when I am not pregnant. I take it on certain days of my cycle and continuously when pregnant. I have never taken synthetic. I believe the studies done that inform the Creighton Model used natural, so that it what I use, from a compounding pharmacy. I have taken it as a vaginal suppository as well as orally and have never had any problems. Hope this is helpful!

This is exactly what I was interested in learning more about----obtaining progesterone from a compounding pharmacy. Who prescribes it for you? Your RE or ob/gyn? Or another dr?

My ob/gyn does not seem to be 'on board' with the progesterone use and my family planning method. I found a particular physician, a family practitioner, through the Creighton Model program, who prescribes the progesterone.

The only drawback with using the compounding pharmacy is that they don't file with my insurance. They do give me a form to use to submit on my own. Apparently depending on whose hands the form gets to, sometimes my insurance agrees to reimburse me and sometimes they don't.
