Hello angel moms,
I had 2-misscarrages and no live births. My OBGYN referred me to a fertility specialist and they are treating me for recurring pregnancy loss. They want to do a laparoscopy or hysterosalpingogram (HSG). They recommend the laparoscopy because its more accurate and comprehensive, however its more invasive b/c its surgery. laparoscopy is used to inspect the outside of the uterus, ovaries and fallopian tubes. Usually, there is one incision near the navel and a second near to the pubic hairline.
During a HSG, a dye (contrast material) is put through a thin tube that is put through the vagina and into the uterus. HSG is done to find a blocked fallopian tube. The test often is done for a woman who is having a hard time becoming pregnant. An infection may cause severe scarring of the fallopian tubes and block the tubes, preventing pregnancy. Occasionally the dye used during a HSG will push through and open a blocked tube.
Also, a HSG find problems in the uterus, such as an abnormal shape or structure, an injury, polyps, fibroids, adhesions, or a foreign object in the uterus. These types of problems may cause painful menstrual periods or repeated miscarriages.
Since seeing the fertility specialist (Dec 2011) I have had a lot of blood work done ruling out other factors. I am not sure if this testing will find anything but I figure it wouldnt hurt in exploring if its a problem that can be corrected. Im leaning toward the HSG.
Anyone has experience with a HSG and/or laparoscopy surgery? Any thoughts?

I was scheduled for the HSG in December, and started spotting that morning, so I am waiting again before I can schedule it. My dr gave me a prescription of motrin 800 and was told to take 1 an hour before the procedure. I was also told there could be spotting afterwards. I was also given a one dose antibiotic to take prior, to prevent infection because they are dilating the cervix. I hope all goes well with either procedure that you have done.
