I had a natral mc on Dec. 25 and I'm getting weekly blood test still to see if my HCG levels are below 5. I guess that is when they know you have passed all the fetal tissue. I hope this helps. I'm sorry about your loss.

I'm so sorry for your loss. If you are asking about blood work to find out why you lost the baby. There is good and bad news. Yes, there is a ton, but they usually won't order it until you have had 2 or 3 (depending on doctor) in a row. That is unless you can provide a good reason in your medical history. I got it done after my first b/c I have a high ANA which can be related, but fortunately nothing else showed up. If you convince your doctor to order it after 1 miscarriage, be prepared to pay, your insurance may not cover. When I had mine done they took 11 vials of blood, found the same extremely high ANA. I went to a GP who ordered 8 more vials, and then to a rheumatologist who took another 6! Fortunately the result in all that was to find out it was probably bad luck.

They can also test fetal tissue to see if there are chromosome problems.

I know we want to know what happened b/c it can provide a lot of closure. Unfortunately, most times they can't tell us. The book "Pregnancy after a loss" explains a lot of the testing and problems that they will look for.

I had a D&C just last month and asked about that...they don't usually do test unless you've had several mc. I got my bloodtest and pap back from my first appointment but everything came back ok...which didn't make me feel any better. Sorry for your loss.

After my first loss they did blood tests to determine if there were any issues. I was so scared but my doctor reminded me several times that no matter what they found, it can be treated. Hang in there and ask you doctor what they can do.

My doctor did order any tests at first, but after doing some research of my own, I called and requested a test for clotting disorders. I was surprised when she said I could have it done. It ended up being negative, all normal clotting times. With this pregnancy, my doc tested my thyroid (alot of my symptoms, even before pregnancy, looked like hypothyroidism) and those levels were normal too. They just assume it was probably just "bad luck", and I haven't asked for any other tests. It all depends on your doctor though. Most doctors DON'T do any testing after 1 m/c. Mine probably only did it b/c I specifically requested a certain test, and she just wanted to put my mind at ease. I'd talk with your doctor about it, see what he/she thinks and go from there. Most of the time, the tests come back negative and it's assumed to be a genetic defect, but every now and then you actually do find something wrong. Good luck!!

They can do blood work to test you HCG levels and when they did my D&C they did some lab work on what they took out. They were able to tell me that it wasn't me it was the baby that was the problem. There really isn't a lot they can do. I got the lab results from the doctor at my week follow up visit. Hope this helps.

I had a d&e 2 weeks ago, my dr called me & said that the tissue test came back inconclusive for chromosome problems. This is my first miscarriage, but did have a high risk pregnancy last time. I didn't request for them to do further tests, but she said that when I come back in for my follow-up in two weeks she will do tests for recurrent miscarriages. Maybe to put my mind at ease, I don't know why. My dr's have been very helpful & supportive.

Hi Amanda, mc is terrible, and I am sorry for both of us. Yes, there are blood tests, but like the others said, if its your first mc your insurance may not pay for it, and you may have to be firm with your doc to get it done.
My doc ordered a high risk panel, I had to wait 5 weeks to get it done. I was tested for hormonal issues, chromosome problems, and blood clotting problems.
