So sorry your going through this. Hugs
My procedure was on 11/16 and my first period started yesterday.
I'm not sure how far along you are so I can't really comment on how long it could last. The worst of it will probably only be a day or so but you could bleed for a week or more. I had an early miscarriage last March, there was no baby growing inside me at all, and I only bleed for a few days.
I had a second miscarriage in November and had a D&C on November 14th, I was supposed to be 13 wks but the baby died at 10 wks. I started to miscarry on my own before I went to the ER and it there was a lot of painful cramping (basically contractions), gushing blood and very large clots. After the D&C, I had light bleeding for a week with no other physical pain.
My first period started 4 weeks after the D&C and I'm now 4 days past ovulation. My first period only lasted 3 days but was very heavy.
Like kloe818 said, I think that they may have to do an ultrasound to check that everything has evacuated your uterus but they may also just test your HCG levels to see that they are going down. If I were you, I'd request that they continue testing you until your levels are down to 0.
I've had several miscarriages - most were 'chemical pregnancies' that didn't hurt. There were two in which heartbeats were detected and when I miscarried those, they HURT. The first one (in which there was a heartbeat, I was about 7.5 weeks along), I had light bleeding. Then a day later a SHARP pain in the center of my abdomen as if someone stabbed me. I passed the tissue later that afternoon. I went in for an ultrasound the next day and we found that my body had naturally taken care of things, so I didn't need a D&C.
The second pregnancy in which we saw a heartbeat was different. I had some (red) bleeding, went to the doc and found (at 10 weeks) that there was no heartbeat anymore. The doc advised that I wait a couple of days, just to see if I'd pass on my own. A day later, I started feeling a dull ache in my lower back and just a little pain in the abdomen. But I didn't pass any tissue that night -- the following morrning, I went in for the D&C.
There are two reasons to get a D&C, I feel. One is (as Kloe mentioned) to prevent infection. If your body doesn't fully take care of the m/c, there's a chance of infection. The other reason is for your emotional health. Honestly, I couldn't stand the thought of waiitng days (or WEEKS!!) for my body to figure it out and m/c on its own. I couldn't go on about my daily business, knowing I was carrying a pregnancy that wasn't viable. I do feel that I probably would have started m/c'ing within the next few days, since I was starting to feel pain, but I'd rather a doctor help me out and make sure it's done. It's, of course, a very personal decision and you need to do what you feel is right for you!
