Hi Steph. I am so sorry for your loss. I lost my baby at 8 and a half weeks to a silent miscarriage so I didn't have my D&C until I was 10 weeks along. I just wanted to try and reassure you about the procedure. I think the doctor generally gives you a choice of having local anesthetic or general anesthetic but I'm not sure if that is always the case. My doctor preferred that I be under general and I felt the same way so I was asleep the whole time. The procedure itself does not usually take more than 30 minutes to an hour. You will most likely wake up and feel quite groggy and out of it for a couple of hours, which is just a side effect of the anesthetic. As long as everything goes okay, they will send you home pretty quickly. I was at the hospital around 10 and left by 2.

As to your questions about testing, that is something you will want to discuss with your doctor before you are admitted. I asked my doctor about testing but she discouraged it because when you are only as far along as I was they typically aren't able to collect enough tissue for a viable sample to do the testing on. I wish now that I had been more insistent about sending it on for testing anyway but I think it is just a personal choice...especially because I wish now that I could have known for sure what the sex of the baby was.

I am so sorry for your loss. I had a D&C after after finding out at my first u/s i was having a "missed miscarriage". The procedure truly wasn't as bad as I though it was going to be. The only thing was when I woke up in recovery, I was sobbing uncontrobally, they said that was normal for some. I personally didn't cramp all that much afterward, bled for a couple of days.
We also told so many people, and I wish we didn't. That was so hard, having to tell them. Ugh! My doctor, did testing without my knowledge, but that was fine. I did find out the gender, and that was bitter sweet. I am so happy you found this site, it has helped me so much.. I'm here anytime if you need to talk..

I'm so sorry for your loss. DH and I found out we lost our baby on Monday. It is such a horrible feeling.

I had a D&C in March to clean up my uterus and they removed a polyp. I was under for the whole procedure. I woke up with a scatchy throat from the tube down my throat. I also was very sick from the meds. It is a fast procedure...I was there at 11 and left around 3. When you wake up they make you rate your pain. They also made me walk and use the bathroom before they'd release me.

My body is miscarrying naturally. But, I am having a lot of cramps and bleeding still. I actually would prefer a D&C and would definitely request the testing. Praying things go well for you!
