Miscarriage Support Group
This community is dedicated to those who have experienced the traumatizing event of a miscarriage or a stillbirth. Miscarriage remains one of the most common complication of pregnancy, but that doesn't make it easy to deal with. but I didn't find it to have the depth that I needed.
Although not specific to miscarriage, the most helpful book I have found so far is:
"Grieving Mindfully: A Compassionate and Spiritual Guide to Coping with Loss"
by Sameet M. Kumar
I feel like the author is speaking to me and so much of what he says resonates.
I don't know what your spiritual beliefs are but IF you are inclined to believe that we create our lifeplans before we are born, this book has a chapter on miscarriage which I have found to be really helpful in terms of understanding spiritual reasons why loss, specifically pregnancy loss, may be built into our lives. With our doctors and within our own minds sometimes, there is so much focus on the medical/physical aspect of things...and what caused it. And could I have done something differently (misplaced responsibility that a lot of us, including myself, struggle with)
But I found the Miscarriage chapter in this book extremely helpful in understanding how personal growth can come about even through pregnancy loss.
This book is: "Your Soul's Gift: The Healing Power of the Life You Planned Before You Were Born" by Robert Schwartz
Also not specific to miscarriage is
Healing Grief, Finding Peace: 101 Ways to Cope With the Death of Your Loved One
by Dr. Louis E. Legrand
This book, however, seems more for someone who has lost a longtime member of their family/life...but I have still found many of the chapters to be helpful. Each "chapter" is just a couple pages long.
As for what to read for distraction...if you can sink yourself into a book of fiction that can be a nice escape. I found that in the early days/weeks after my loss this just wasn't somewhere that my mind could go. But now it can.
Also, I really like Eckhart Tolle's books "The Power of Now" and "A New Earth" because, among many other things, reading his philosophies helps me to stay in line with what matters in life....the present moment....and not get so caught up in dwelling on my pain or dwelling on my frustration with others or my frustration with myself. It helps me with healthy detachment from my earthly desires......to step back and recognize the essence of myself and that my happiness does not need to be tied to what does or doesn't happen in my life.
I don't know if I'd be able to focus on reading yet, but I'm trying to find ways to sooth myself and stay off all the Mc info websites.
I'm afraid to try to pick up any books that haven't been vetted for upsetting themes by women that understand. Struggling with the tv as well.
I had trouble focusing too. And wanting to spend a lot of time looking up ways to cope.
I found that I felt very very very hypersensitive to the world around me for a few weeks. And not that I was ever a fan of TV or movie violence, because I'm not, but I couldn't stand anything that even bordered on the topic of death or injury.
Or songs with harsh lyrics.
I just felt like an exposed nerve and completely sensitized to the entire world. The world felt too loud and fast for me for a while.
Have you ever heard of Bellaruth Naparstek (sp?) She makes some really good guided imagery CDs. And they don't require any effort. I have often fallen asleep to the sound of her voice.
I don't think there is a book out there that will meet all our needs in helping us cope with our losses since we all process, think and believe so differently. Books that had elements I liked were mended by Angie smith and grieving the child I never knew by kathe wunnenburg.
I also found writing and journaling to be therapeutic (about my losses and just life in general). Also attempted writing poetry and that helped a lot too...my brain had to really work to express what I wanted to say.
Wish I could help on the fiction front but haven't read much lately and can't think of anything I have read that's worth recommending. :(
