I have tried so many. Many of them didn't help. A few of them did, at least for a season. Cambria was probably my favorite. It worked quicker than the others. It's powder that you put in water and drink. It's got a very strong peppermint taste, but not bad. It worked quicker and more effectively than the Imitrex, Relpax, Maxault, or about anything else out there for me. And it's much less expensive than Relpax. At 2-3 migraines per week, I couldn't afford more than a passing test with Relpax.

I've been on the roller coaster too. Currently, this is how my personal pharmacy rolls out: If the headache is just itty bitty, I'll try 2 excedrin, maybe 3, 4 if it feels stubborn. Mind you, only if it's itty bitty. If it gets past the point of itty bitty, I may try to throw some advil on top of that (yes, it tears up the stomach, I've already had multiple stomach ulcers from the overuse of aspirin). Once it's at the point where I know for sure OTC won't move it, and it's probably at a level 6-7 now, I add in xanax (the right amount actually works great to break up a migraine) and my anti nausea, Thorazine (also works great on headache pain). If that's not enough and my headache still progresses, I'll take relpax. If I ever get to a level 10, I take steroids.

To be honest, it's rare that the xanax, thorazine, and relpax doesn't take a bad migraine away. It kicks in quick, and the pain and nausea doesn't usually come back.

As for the price of the relpax, it is expensive. But I get mine through Canada. I get 24 tabs for $200. That's pricey too, but if I were to get it here, for $200 I would only get maybe between 6-10 tablets.

Thanks for the replies. Sounds like I'm not the only one who has trouble finding something to make them go away. I recently had eye surgery and my eye is aching....so I don't know if it's issues with my eye OR just one of these migraines (since it feels like a migraine with the pain located in/at the eye).

I am from Canada and the relpax cost me some but at least the insurance covered it. Only thing is I only got 12 capsules (20mg each) so I take it sparingly. (And my dr charges for prescription refills)

Your doctor can override the number of Relpax you get a month. I've had two doctors do this for me here in the states. Then the Imitrex is covered by insurance, I'm getting I think 60 for at least 45 days on Medicare.

lu2013, I don't know what relpax costs in Canada, being that your's is covered by insurance. It may be cheaper. Also, just so you know, they do have a 40 mg strength, which you may find more effective. 20 mg for me would be like taking a tic tac. For others it works. But it's just an FYI in case you didn't know.

Also, if you are having problems with your eye, that can DEFINITELY cause a migraine. I often scratch my cornea, and that always gives me a migraine.

Beginning of migraine, 2 aleve. if it's on it's way up, then 3 aleve instead.
1 cup of coffee. 1 cup + water. start sipping gingerale.
If nausea begins before migraine, hydroxyzine 25 mg oral or if very nauseous, phenergan suppository x 1 for nausea.
if at work, may try 1 excedrin migraine if really bad and aleve not helping.
if not at work and can go to bed, if aleve not helping, go to bed, shades down, pillow over head to reduce noise, 2 tramadol oral and repeat suppository if > 6 hrs. since last one and still nauseous.
Hopefully just fall asleep and wake up and it is gone.
sometimes every 1-2 months, I need IV toradol or IM toradol at local Urgent care center. Rarely, IV Morphine 1-2 mg. Cautious on the morphine because if used too often can cause rebound HA.
I believe my starting Migralief (Migralief.com) has helped decrease my migraines. How much? They have Migralief Now for Immediate relief if having a migraine. That did not work for me. 5-6 weeks post 1st round of Botox. The decision is still out on that one.

As for the dosage, my GP first gave me a sample at 40mg. I cut it in half and it seemed to do the job so am starting with 20mg prescription. If I find overtime it doesn't help, then will ask for the 40mg. Thanks for the note.

And yeah, I've had recent eye surgery. Actually the past few days I thought something was wrong with my recovery but now I am thinking that its my "regular" migraines with the pain in the eye area. Also, my prescription is off until my eyes settle.

That's great that your doctor gave you 60 relpax pills at once. My prescription gave me only 6 pills which cost $20 after insurance (but soon DH's insurance should kick in to help out as he's started a new job). I do have 3 repeats on it before I need to pay the refill fee. So alas, I use them only when really needed. Otherwise, I just suffer and try the Tylenol (which mentioned is useless), peppermint stick (which only works if very minor migraine) or advil (hard on my stomach)

Lu, I was only getting 9 Imitrex a month but having migraines 24/7. My primary got them to lift the limit even higher, I got 60 a month. Then I found my biggest trigger and my headaches finally got better 4 years ago. But then got bad again a little over a year ago. So my new primary put in the override again for more tablets. It's been a bit of a roller coaster this last year. I'm doing my 4th Botox next month and am starting to get some relief again.

I also have Promethezine and Phenergran suppositories for nausea. Zofran doesn't work for me.

Has anyone tried Fioricet or also Fiorinal.? The difference is that Fioricet has Acetaminophen and Fiorinal contains Aspirin. Hugs GB

Paracetamol, possibly with Codeine as well.

I use Maxalt, Fioricet, muscle relaxers, and Zofran for nausea. Sometimes an Imitrex injection in my thigh.
Once in a blue moon: Tramadol. If all else fails the ER gives me Morphine.
And, Topamax as a preventative.

I also get BOTOX injections.

That's my treatment!

I take Maxalt at the first sign of a migraine headache. It seems to work faster if I don't wait until it's really bad. I am allowed to take another 10 mg. tablet if the headache isn't gone in two hours.

The second dose helps a lot if I'm having a bad migraine headache. I tend to relax, fall asleep, and try to take it easy when I'm awake. Have to eat light foods, like soup and crackers. Most likely I'll fall asleep again, and then start to feel better.

Angee7, can I ask how long you have been doing the Botox? I also take Imitrex, Fiorcet, and Topamax plus nausea meds. I have my 4 th Botox next Thursday, so this is one year. The headaches are better but not gone. In fact the last two weeks have been hell, I guess because the Botox has worn off. Do you think yours will ever go away? I'm beginning to think maybe not after 38 years.

New treatment:
Botox is helping! No major migraines in last month. Tried Indomethacin 25mg oral , It put me to sleep for 4 hrs! Caution for those taking this for 1st time! Take at home when you can not be responsible for anyone. :)

I'm on Zonegran as a preventive every night. I have Baclofen I can take up to three times a week, if the pain gets too bad.

The neurologist just switched the Baclofen for Skelaxin this week, but I haven't picked it up yet. We'll see how well it works- the Baclofen puts me to sleep, but does nothing for the actual pain.
