Migraine is a neurological disease, of which the most common symptom is an intense and disabling episodic headache. Migraine headaches are usually characterized by severe pain on one or both sides of the head and are often accompanied by photophobia (hypersensitivity to light), phonophobia (hypersensitivity to sound) and nausea.

I've never had this before and I've never read about it. It's been going on for months now and I don't know if it's aura or something else. Has anyone every experience the following?

It's like, in my vision, a tiny, highly illuminated bug, goes zooming across my vision. It has a tail, or leave a lighted trail, and zig zags, and stops, and proceeds in another direction. Usually on my migraine side, eye, but sometimes in the other eye too.

I do get a migraine almost every day, but when I get these visions, I am usually NOT on any pills at the time. Because of the frequency of the migraines, I try to hold out for as long as I can before I take drugs as to not get dependant. Currently Botox is what keeps my migraines down to a subtle roar.

That sounds like an ocular migraine. I don't think I've had one, but I've read about them. This site is down at the moment for server maintenance, but check it out. There is a lot of good information there.

One of my friends who has hemiplegic migraines referred me to this site. It is the best I've seen.

i do get an aura it is like i can smell my own body odor and it is really stinky but this is usually after a headache has started and i know i am going to the migraine stage its wierd

I have had the *sparkly stars* in my vision prior to a really bad migraine that will have me down for several days. I always have a constant headache, usually that is bilateral but my migraines will override the original headache and concentrate on the left side (usually) but I generally get like tunnel vision or the stars, smells really are almost always present, the smell of microwave popcorn. and when I actually smell the popcorn that isn't an aura it will trigger a migraine especially if the popcorn got burnt.

I do have ocular auras, not exactly like this but some are similar. Some are lightning flashes in random directions. Some are complete or partial blindness. Some are a shimmering visual area that starts small and spreads to one side, growing in size.
Then there are the smells, the numbness, and the ear pain, the confusion and amnesia, etc. never a dull moment!!
Keep a good journal of each aura, onset and duration and relation to migraine to share with your doctor.

I started getting the auras about five years ago. Sometimes each migraine has one, and sometimes they come on without it. Anytime I get an aura, I try to get a jump on the headache. Migraines are just so odd. I wish you all the best!

It could be aura but it could also be an eye problem. Have you seen an optamologist for an exam lately? My neurologist always wants me seen by her just in case it's not neurological in nature.

Thanks for your replies. I had a dream last night, oddly enough, about having pressure in my eyes. The migraines are almost daily now and now the weird aura's. Time for a second opinion.

The eye thing is always worrisome to me because I have a cousin who was driving down the road and his eye flashed. It turned out his retina detached. He needed surgery and months later the doctor realized both eyes had a detached retina. He remembered flashes but they weren't that big of a deal.

So I think only a professional can discern whether the problem is a migraine with aura or something even more serious.

I wanted to second the suggestion to see an opthamologist, try to see one as opposed to an optometrist. My auras have changed drastically over the years but my stepmom thought she was having a different type of aura and it turned out what she was seeing were things actually floating across her eye.

I would agree with poster - Faithtoday, I would see an opthamologist. It may be nothing, it may be an aura, but it is something to get checked out. Floaters can also be a symptom of other illnesses and disorders.

Thank you everyone, I did take your advise and got it checked out. Had a thorough check up with all things concerned and then some. Eyes are great. It seems to be just an aura.
