Migraine is a neurological disease, of which the most common symptom is an intense and disabling episodic headache. Migraine headaches are usually characterized by severe pain on one or both sides of the head and are often accompanied by photophobia (hypersensitivity to light), phonophobia (hypersensitivity to sound) and nausea.

Has anyone ever tried occipital nerve blocks for migraines? I don't know anything about them but someone suggested it and I wondered if any of you have had experience with it. Thanks.

I have had one done. I would never ever do it again. However, my results aren't typical - it actually gave me an occipital headache on top of my migraine.

There are test blocks they can do (short term blocks) that should be done before the very long lasting ones are done. Please try to get those first.

I hope they do work for you and that you find some good relief from them ^.^

I've had them done just once so for and they were effective, but didn't last long. It's something that would have to be repeated every 3-4 weeks. I was told it was the same drugs used used by a dentist before filling a tooth.

I've had two occipital blocks. I thought the first one helped but the second didn't. The use a "caine" like lidocaine and a long acting local steroid like depomedrol. A person does get a bit of systemic effect from the steroid as well as the local effect. You get one on each side of the upper back of the neck at the skull.

I probably wouldn't do it again.
