Migraine Headaches Support Group
Migraine is a neurological disease, of which the most common symptom is an intense and disabling episodic headache. Migraine headaches are usually characterized by severe pain on one or both sides of the head and are often accompanied by photophobia (hypersensitivity to light), phonophobia (hypersensitivity to sound) and nausea.
I understand your fear. However,if you read some of the other posts here, you'll see you're not alone. I'm 44 years old,and I've had episodes similar to yours since I was 11. My numbness has never lasted for over an hour, but I've heard of others having it for several days.
I've certainly experienced all the symptoms you've described. I've had them for over 30 years, and I admit they still terrify me. I'm always afraid of strokes. But so far,I've always gotten over them.
I'm sorry to hear your doctors aren't being more understanding. But if they're not overly concerned, hopefully they know what they're talking about. Perhaps it would ease your concerns if you went somewhere else for a second opinion.
I mainly just wanted to let you know that I've experienced those symptoms for the majority of my life, and I haven't had a stroke yet. I hope that makes you feel a bit better.
Going to the hospital was definatley the right thing. You did good. They are trained to detect the difference so you can put your mind at ease that you did not have a seisure. Migraines do mimic stroke, moreso for some than others. I have this problem also and I have told my sons that if I can't stick my tongue out or if I smile and it is lopsided, THEN call the ambulance.
Ah bless you. I wish you weren't part of this, but you do get used to it and adapt.
On a side note, I do take Ativan everyonce in a while because this is a hard disease to deal with sometimes. Talk to your doctor about how you feel.
