Migraine headaches are usually characterized by severe pain on one or both sides of the head and are often accompanied by photophobia (hypersensitivity to light), phonophobia (hypersensitivity to sound) and nausea.

2nd CGRP Drug AJOVY approved by the FDA

The 2nd cgrp drug was just approved by the FDA on Sept. 14, called AJOVY. This one you can get either monthly or quarterly.


I believe there will be a 3rd one out later this year, and a 4th one out some time next year. From my understanding, they all work just a little bit differently, so if one doesn't work for you, maybe one of the others will work better.



I believe that Teva (the maker of this drug) is going to have a similar program to what aimovig had. There will be a 2 month free trial of this drug. Some states did not participate in that program, so anyone seeing a headache specialist or neurologist, please ask them if they are a state participating in it.

Thanks so much for the info. I see my neuro again in Dec, for the first time since my initial visit last year. Not sure if my meds are working and it would be so much worse without it (I am on just one) OR if I need to try something new. I have a feeling she will want me to try Botox before any of the new things though. In any case, I appreciate your dilligence in notifying the board abou these new treatments.

You would probably have to at least try botox before you would be approved for any of the cgrp drugs. There are already many people in the appeals process for aimovig.

But if your headaches are that bad, you can be on more than one preventative. I'm currently on 4 of them.
Also, don't be afraid of trying botox. It has helped many people with their migraines. I was on it, but it just didn't work for me.

As for the diligence, I just know that there is a lot of hopelessness for the people in this board sometimes. And I just want people to know that there is hope, and new treatments are coming out for us to give us our lives back.

Yvette- did you get your first dose of Aimovig yet? I went to my headache specialist
Last week. I was 30% better last month with the Aimovig. I still get some bad migraines that send me for a loop here and there. I will take 30%. He mentioned
the new drug Ajovy by Teva. It works slightly different but not exactly sure how.
This does give migraine sufferers another option if Aimovig is not helping.
Hope you can get your injection soon. Hoping for relief soon.

themanlouise- I actually had my 2nd dose of aimovig about 2 weeks ago. I think it has helped my migraines, but it's hard for me to say one way or the other because I've been really sick since one week after my very first dose. When I get sick, the first place I feel it is in my head. I get a "sickly" headache that just doesn't go away until the fever goes away, and I've had this fever for over a month now.

I'll be able to tell for sure once this virus goes away. But I do think it may be helping because despite this "sickly" headache....none have been a migraine.

It’s good to hear you started Aimovig Yvette! I’m glad it’s helping some. Are you on 70mg? Or 140mg? What do your mds think about your fever? Is it a reaction to the Aimovig? That’s a long time to have a fever. I hope you feel better soon.

I'm on the 140mg. I think Jefferson started all their patients who got that medicine on 140mg.

My PCP thinks my fever is related to the aimovig, however my headache specialist does not. I also do not. I really don't know what's wrong, but I just know something's not right. I shouldn't be this sick for so long. But I'm seeing my headache specialist on Monday so he can take a look at me. I'll keep you posted on what he says.
