Migraine Headaches Support Group
Migraine is a neurological disease, of which the most common symptom is an intense and disabling episodic headache. Migraine headaches are usually characterized by severe pain on one or both sides of the head and are often accompanied by photophobia (hypersensitivity to light), phonophobia (hypersensitivity to sound) and nausea.
I am sorry you have in-laws who do not understand. I agree, it certainly adds stress to the family dynamics.
I am fortunate that my own family and my husband are wonderful to me. My husband just tells me to go to bed and take a nap. He takes care of dinner or whatever needs to be done. He has been like that for years. I am forever saying - I don't know how you stand me. :)
Also, I have a neurologist who gets migraines so he is wonderful too and always calls back within two hours of me putting a call into him.
I guess I need to count my blessings.
Gosh I wish I had a husband that I could count on to take care of me. I am single and self employed so if I don't work I don't make any money, it is as simple as that. So I have to force myself to go to work sick....literally. At first last year I would take off days when I was sick but then I was losing so much money I couldn't do it anymore that I just had to force myself to go in sick no matter what and it was not pretty. The worst part for me is the nausea. Not too fun when you are talking to a client and you have to excuse yourself to go throw up.
Hey shelleyaz who is your neurologist? I wonder if it is the same one I have. I am seeing Dr. Erros. If you have someone different you like let me know. One thing I do want to know is the cause of my migraines and he does not seem to be interested in finding out, just says he thinks they are genetic even though no one else in my family has them (although we think my maternal grandmother might have, and it is possible that my half sister might altough her headaches were dx as cluster headaches).
I actually think they might be hormonal in origin because I seem to be having lots of other symptoms that appear to be hormonal (loss of hair, tired, wieght gain when I wasn't taking the topomax, loss of vision, cold extremities, memory problems, etc.).

I also see this naturopath:

I think she does a far better job of getting to the core of the problem. An MD typically just gives you pills to manage your symptoms.
All of my doctors say that the majority of migraines are caused by hormone issues.
My doctor said they were genetic too because something like 90% are but my parents almost never had a headache let alone a migraine.
I am pretty convinced that once I get the hormones settled (we are close) and focus on eating protein over sugar, I should do much better ( I already am).
It seems like my migraines are changing. Can't wait to see what my doctor says.
I continue to see a huge difference eating far more protein and less sugar.
What kind of hormonal treatments have you done? What kind of food alterations have you done?
I went to a naturopathic doctor who specializes in bio-identical hormones. She knows more than my internist, neurologist and chiropractor put together. I will say though, I saw a chiropractor for over a year but once my "structure/neck" was doing better I weaned myself off.
As far as food, basically I eat all fresh fruit and vegetables usually organic and from the farmer's market, meat that is usually hormone-free and grilled. I eat very little processed foods. I drink some decaf tea, homemade lemonade, and water. From time to time I will make a cake, cookies or ice cream from scratch. I buy 9-grain bread from a bakery.
If I have candy, only Hershey candy will not give me a migraine.
I also make sure that I get at least 7 hours sleep and NOT go to bed too late (like after 1am).
