Menopause Support Group
Menopause is the physiological cessation of menstrual cycles associated with advancing age. It normally occurs in women between the ages of 45 and 55, when the body begins to slow and stop the production of eggs, estrogen and progesterone production decreases, and menstruation diminishes, eventually stopping altogether.

Saw ob yesterday, I've had pre existing anxiety for 10 years which was somewhat under control until early last year. When you enter premenopause, peri or menopause dr. says all conditions exasterpate even if it is diabetes, cholesteral etc.... Had all my blood work checked from md and another set of blood work for hormoes from ob. All levels came back in normal range. My anxiety is so horrible, I called a crisis center last week, just to let you know how bad it is/can get. Prescription for this month, 100 mg progesterone pill 12 days prior to cycle, 5 mg prozac everyday, 0.5 klonopin in am and 0.5 klonopin in pm. I also added blackstrap molasses (I read this somewhere) to help with heavy bleeding and clots. 1 tsp daily. I took the progesterone last night, and yes, it calmed me tremendously!! Slept like a baby! I was previously taking the klonopin and this just added more calm. I'm not excited about taking the prozac due to seratonin syndrome in dec on 20 or even down to 10 mg so we shall see how that goes.
Summary: I am normal, healthy 46 year old, but yet I cannot function on a day to day basis. Praying this is it.

My anxiety is really horrible too. I'm on Celexa and it has helped a lot. I've also taken up yoga and I exercise (cardio& weights 3 days a week and walking 2 miles -3 days a week) and it's helped a lot. Its a lot of exercise but I couldn't function before and now I can and I've lost about 8 pounds in one month. Before I couldn't sleep, I couldn't focus, it was really bad, I'm 44. I don't feel normal, but I do feel better and I actually have had some really GOOD days. I don't know much about the serotonin syndrome, but maybe an anti-anxiety drug like wellbutrin or something would give you some relief. Seeing a psychiatrist to get the best meds may help too.

How many mg of celexa do you take sashie? Just curious because it was another option. Thanks!!

I am 52 and feel like i was starting to lose my mind..I have had anxiety since 1988,however lately it has been getting worse and it is driving me crazy.I really thing it is pre menopause and the PMS is worse every month.I take klonopin.but I believe I am going to have to go back on the zoloft as it helped before....My whole body just feels out of whack.Lately I have had to take the full 3 klonopin a day.Seems when my serotonin gets low.the anxiety and the racing heart and middle of the night panic attacks that wake me get worse......So nice to not be alone in this..

Cloudypearl, how did you know you had serotonin syndrome? was it due to increasing your AD?

I take Gabapentin for the anxiety. It has helped alot. 900 mgs at bedtime and 100 mgs 3 x day This is prescribed by an Alternative Medicine Psychiatrist. Anxiety is the worst symptom of peri/meno/post for me. Hope you get to feeling better!!! Deny

I`m in perimenopause, & I have mild anxiety! I`ve tried meditating and walking for anxiety! It sounds like other people have tried exercise too! I`m also experimenting with magnesium over the counter. It is said we don`t get enough, of that in our diets! It can help with sleep ,which I`ve started, to have trouble with! & it`s said to help with anxiety!

I always had anxiety but it escalated during menopause. Do bring it to your GYN's attention so that it can be addressed. Don't suffer unnecessarily.
