Sorry for this news! But there's a good chance it's nothing. A number of harmless things can cause abnormal paps such as inflammation, various types of bacteria, etc. So it's often suggested that an abnormal pap be repeated before undergoing further testing or treatment.

"Although many cervical cell changes are very common and not related to cancer, they sometimes make cervical cells look like abnormal cells. So your health care provider may suggest that you repeat your Pap test or have other follow-up tests to be certain that the cell changes are not cancer. (See the tables beginning at Table 1 for more information.)"

Never had abnormal pap smear but I have had abnormal mammogram a couple times, did biopsy and it turns out to be ok. So there is a chance that it will be ok with you also. There are many things that can cause an abnormal pap smear. So stay positive and let me know how everything turns out.

I had only one abnormal pap smear and the re-do was normal (can't remember how many months I waited to re-do it).

ive had a abnormal one....but it was nothing.

I've had a few that were abnormal, but just did a repeat 6 months later and it was always fine. I never got to the point where I could go 2 years between, because you need so many normal ones in a row before they offer that option. Now, I don't have a cervix anymore, so no more paps.

Since too much screening can cause overtreatment and many infections are transient, paps are no longer recommended yearly. Current guidelines say that women of average risk should start getting paps at age 21 and only every 3 years until age 65. Women over 65 don't need paps. Starting at age 30, they can go 5 years if they get HPV testing along with the Pap.

I had one and it was fibriods , had a DNC and was fine ..then eventually got emdrometious and had a total hysterectomy...

they found Endometrial Cells on my pap so I got sent on to a gyno. He did a biopsy and I'll get the results in two weeks.

I did not know that women of average risk should only get one every 3 years. That is very interesting info, thanks for sharing that one

I thought it was every 2 years. Also, that only happens if you have 2 in a row that are normal. If they find any abnormal cell, you don't want to wait 2 (or 3) years.
