Meniere's disease is a balance disorder of the inner ear. The symptoms of Meniere's are variable; not all sufferers experience the same symptoms. However, "classic Meniere's" is considered to comprise the following four symptoms: Periodic episodes of rotary vertigo, hearing loss, tinnitus, and a sensation of fullness or pressure in one or both ears.

MD/breadtfeeding/allergies

Hello all! I recently gave birth to my first child, about three months ago. During my pregnancy I was pretty my continually sick with my MD. Since her birth I had a reprieve for a few months, but my MD has come back full force now :( My hearing has gotten worse again, ears are popping from the pressure each time I swallow, and I'm feeling nauseated and dizzy alot. I'm currently breadtfeeding my daughter and I am unable to take my normal meds- HCTZ and phenerghan. My allergies are also really bad right now (just the other day they stated that our area was having record amounts of pollen right now. Just wondering if any of you all were breadtfeeding children with your MD and how do you work through your bad periods?? I'm trying my best to follow my diet- low salt/caffeine free. I also don't drink or smoke. Have any of you all tried nasal rinses wiu saline? Did it help? Also, has anyone gotten the shots injected into their ear drum? They say they can do that because it isn't systemic, but I wAs scared of them...an advice is welcomed!!!

You are finding yourself in a very difficult situation. Trying to care for an infant with MD is an enormous challenge and safety risk. I'm sure that you're being extra careful with your baby. You may need some outside help to get throught the day.
The direct shots in the ear may or may not work. If they do work I've heard that it's not 100% guaranteed and painfull. You may feel worse before feeling better, so I've heard. My doctor told me about the shots a long time ago.
I know that you don't want to be taking drugs when breastfeeding and that's wise but taking nothing leaves you completely without help.
I used Vinpocetine, which is an extract from the Periwinkle plant to help offset the vertigo attacks. It dilates the tiny blood vessels in the inner ear and helps to fend off the vertigo attacks. It works for most people who try it. I tried Serc which does the same thing and is a man made drug and much more expensive and it didn't work for me. I don't think know if taking Vinpocetine would find its way into breast milk and if it could have any ill effects.

I take ginger capsules which help immensely with dizziness, nausea and inflammation! I also have a natural sinus pill called Supraclear sinus and chest by Rainbow light. I had problems using the nasal pots due to my ears already not draining properly.

I understand completely. I am pregnant now and the only medication that helped with the vertigo--valium--is off limits for me and baby. Its gotten continually worse and I decided not to breastfeed. I've tried ginger (was also mentioned to help with morning sickness) during weeks 12-20 with no relief. Right now I don't have a choice, so its making sure I am hydrated all the time, take lipo-flavanoids, and get help from family and co-workers. The doctor gave me a note regarding periods of what I call "stillness"--just 15 mins every couple of hours to rebalance, sit or lay down in the office and center myself. I am afraid of the shots, so I am staying away. Hubby has been a huge help, too, escorting me around when I need it. I hope it works out--I don't know how you feel about breastfeeding, but you can switch to formula if it gets too bad. Good Luck.
