Meniere's disease is a balance disorder of the inner ear. The symptoms of Meniere's are variable; not all sufferers experience the same symptoms. However, "classic Meniere's" is considered to comprise the following four symptoms: Periodic episodes of rotary vertigo, hearing loss, tinnitus, and a sensation of fullness or pressure in one or both ears.

I hate Doctors....

Okay so I went to the nuero ent guy today and for the last week or so I have had horrid headaches and my balance is crap. so his intern takes down all these notes does some tests and the doctor comes and says okay what is the worst problem. I say my balance and I have these awful headaches. So he prescribes dyazide and PT. He says but I don't think you have Menieres you don't get dizzy. I would try to tell him I do get dizzy and asked him about the other test the Ent sent me too and his response was well I think to much testing to soon is done. He didn't ask me whyt he other doc tested or anything. He did a hearing test that should low frequency loss more then the last test I had. So I have lost hearing but my hearing is bi lateral in both ears. I am so frustrated I wasn't to scream and what makes it worse is my husband likes him. I am not sure what to do. He said come back in 6mo and we do another hearing test if you don't improve we do MRI. He gave me a booklet on Menieres. I am so confused. I hate doctors.

My doctor ordered an MRI early on to rule out anything serious. I'm surprised he wants you to wait. Dyazide and low sodium helps me tremendously. As long as I take the meds and keep my sodium around 1,500mg daily (and avoid caffeine) I don't get the vertigo. Have you considered an upper cervical chiropractor? If you get a clear MRI you should think about it. Hope things improve for you.

Karenplus8 I agrees with you. Mine is like yours and now after he told me my MRI was ok, he now said on the third visit my MRI was not ok. So now I have to wait 6 months for an CT and hearing aid. He asked me the same question yours asked, what is the worst problem. I think its for the money they act that way. Mine did not even give me a booklet,. Funny thing he wants to do another hearing test. That will be my third one I did one last June, then two weeks ago, now in Sept he wants me to do another. I hope my insurance say no to him. I pray they do. So I agree with you, I hate doctors.

If you haven't had an MRI to rule out a rare tumor that can cause Meniere the docs are not doing their job. Even the military doctors did that and they usually are not the best. I saw a neurologist early on, who my husband also liked at the time, he ended up discharging me from his program. He told me and my husband I was making up symptoms to get my husband's attention. I mentioned with 15 years of marriage I knew of better ways to get his attention!!! There's nothing wrong with asking for a 2nd opinion - especially with a neurotoligist!!! They can be hard to find but in my opinion is was worth it! Good luck!

Leslie that was my thought. but my husband seemed to think him waiting on an MRI was a good thing the Doctors whole things was well it costs 16,000 and only 1% of people with dizzy symptoms have things that come up on the MRI that are wrong with them.

So sorry to hear this. I never had an MRI but my symptoms were clearly MD so they didn't think it was necessary. They did a number of tests that supported MD. Migraines can cause the same symptoms and to diagnose MD, they need to see 3 of the 4 symptoms present themselves, vertigo, hearing loss, tinnitus, fullness. If you have at least 3, I'm surprised MD wouldn't be diagnosed. Losing faith in your physician is an awful feeling and I would only say that it is important you have someone you can trust, not your husband. There is much confusion with this disease, as I have learned and I am more fortuante than most to have someone who is a leader treating the disease. I pray you find no less in your physician.

It seems to me that most doctors dont want to admit to a meniars dignosis for some reason. I had ask my family doctor for a referal to a neurologist . I think it miffed him that i asked. A doctor wants to be right about there own decision. He gave me the referall and i had to jump thru all the hoops- MRI, hearing tests, ETC.When those tests were done he put me on a wait-watch for 6 months plus a low sodium diet. The diet ,i think worked for the barfing and slowed down my vertigo but not completely.He admitted to me having MD in my left ear. I have bad vretigo daily. Now the doctor recomended the nerve surgery to solve my problem.This has taken about 8 months to get this proposel from him.Lots going on with me. I have an appt with my neuro surgeon next monday to talk about the surgery. But,"I look ok ".

Well the diuretic worked for most of the day but now this evening my ears are filling up and the right one is painful again *sigh*

I take a diurectic twice a day because once a day once wasn't enough. Where do you live? Maybe someone on the site can tell you a good Menieres specialist in your area. If you are in Jacksonville, FL I swear by mine. He listened to me while I cried while I was explaining meds weren't working and made me feel like I was listened to. Good luck!

HE did not talk to me about my symptoms all he heard from my mouth was that I had a headache for 3 days. After that he had made up his mind that it was vestibular Migraine. He asked me what type of dizziness I had that was most bothersome and named three he didn't ask me if I had spinning vertigo. He was leading the when he asked questions. Now that I think about it. I have hearing loss and it came on suddenly after a spell of vertigo. Only thing is my vertigo is bi lateral not in just one ear. And why throw out the results of the Echo and vng I can only assume because they didn't support his theory.

my old ENT was an idiot. I have found one now that isnt just ready to go cutting into my head. I guess some surgieriesare sucessful but alot do not come without consquences. I do ot have alot of trust in doctors at the moment just glad I think I finally found one who cares more about me and not how much is going into his pocket.

My vertigo started about 8 years ago. I went to a regular ENT and I liked him. After a few years he said that I had Meniere's rather than just vertigo. But with all his kindness, I wasn't getting better. After a really bad dizzy spell I just happened to have my annual physical set up with my GP. She said I should go to a dizziness specialist and recommended someone at the University of Miami School of Medicine. If you live near any university hospitals, you may be able to find doctors that are more used to dealing with vertigo and Meniere's not an ENT who does tonsils and earaches. Good luck to us all.

The Doctor I saw was a University Doctor. He was supposed to call me back today between 11 and 12. His assistant called and told me he would call. He never called..... I am pretty done with him.

I had hoped Doctors were finally improving on MD so reading this makes me angry as getting diagnosed not only can help save your hearing but also your sanity! I have also encountered the same experiences plus since I had a Workers comp case, they blamed it on the high blood pressure and menopause even the ENT tho he did order an MRI. And I can't understand WHY more information isn't out there about this disease esp since so many people seem to be getting it??
Karen, you can always ask for a 2nd opinion but I know it's hard to do so...I believe in the power of prayer and pray for any doctor I see now be4 I go:)

Yes, I am not going to see this Doctor again in fact I am going back to my second ENT the one who diagnosed me with Menieres and did the tests to find it. He had referred me to the one who never called me back.
