Meniere's Disease Support Group

Meniere's disease is a balance disorder of the inner ear. The symptoms of Meniere's are variable; not all sufferers experience the same symptoms. However, "classic Meniere's" is considered to comprise the following four symptoms: Periodic episodes of rotary vertigo, hearing loss, tinnitus, and a sensation of fullness or pressure in one or both ears.

Hi all. I was wondering, does anyone else have HSV, (herpes virus) either type 1 or 2? I understand this could be a touchy subject for some people so you don't have to get into specifics or anything. I've just been reading a lot on Meniere's and there seems to be a lot of cases of Meniere's sufferers having HSV also. I frequently get cold sores so I know I have the herpes virus, just wondering how many others do as well. Thanks for any answers! Jeff

Yes, I have it, too, though I'm one of those people who have never had an outbreak, so I have no idea if it's related to Meniere's outbreaks at all.

So, I have lots of questions about this. I understand that HSV 1 is related to cold sores and HSV 2 is related to chicken pox. I've been reading up on it trying to get some answers because my good ear continues to get worse with pressure. I think people avoid this discussion because of the association with sexually transmitted disease. But, am I wrong? you have it if you have had chicken pox, shingles, or cold sores??? You can get it as a child and it stays with you.... it doesn't leave the body, but attacks cells and then lies dormant until..... you get MD? or Alzheimer's or ?
Has anyone had a good discussion about this with their doctor?
Is there any other source besides widipedia that gives more information?

My brain doc tested me for a lot of things n the beginning and I was told I had it but I never get cold sores so he told me mine stays asleep but a lot of people have it...

This is very interesting. I don't get cold sores and have not been around anyone with HSV but I get a reaccuring sore spot on the side of my tounge. You can't see a sore but it feels like I bit my tounge or have a litte cancre sore. I never paid any attention to it but I have noticed it is always in the same spot. You have raised an interesting subject.

Autoimmune disorders cover a wide spectrum of conditions. It has been proclaimed by some in the medical field that MD is tied into this group of conditions, that is why one of the first attempts to treatment is prednisone.

I have had several conditions that fall into the category of autoimmune disorders, HSV is not one of them however.

There is a doctor in Africa who found a correlation between Meniere's disease and the people who have Herpes - my understanding HSV type 1. If you do a search on Google - I found this information several years ago. Most people I have met who have Meniere's have this complex.

For those of you who have severe hearing loss and have not gotten a hearing aid - and try so hard to hear that it causes major migraine or head pain from stress, I tried on a hearing aid the other day - wore it for about 30 minutes and couldn't believe what I was missing! AND my headache somewhat went away! AND I didn't or couldn't focus on my tinnitus! It was such a miracle I started to cry - hearing what my voice sounded like again - people talking from afar, not having to lean forward, put my hand to my ear and strain to hear!! I did get a slight headache from crying, buy hey, if I can wear a hearing aid and hear people coming up from behind me, never have to strain to hear anyone again, never feel isolated or stupid because I can't hear or misunderstand what people are saying - it is worth the $3000.00 for the ONE hearing aid!! By the way, it is a special hearing aid that helps the tinnitus go away and can be set to your fluctuating hearing loss! Truly a miracle! And hey, aren't we we're worth it?!

Thank you for such a wonderful story on the success of your hearing aid. Would you mind sharing the specifics on what brand/model you are having great results with? It is encouraging a miracle of restoring self confidence by being able to hear. I have people asking me questions three times now, before I get it correct. I don't think they will be doing that for long if I don't do something soon.
