Meniere's Disease Support Group
Meniere's disease is a balance disorder of the inner ear. The symptoms of Meniere's are variable; not all sufferers experience the same symptoms. However, "classic Meniere's" is considered to comprise the following four symptoms: Periodic episodes of rotary vertigo, hearing loss, tinnitus, and a sensation of fullness or pressure in one or both ears.
There are three of us on this site who have had or are about to have Sac Decompression Surgery. I will speek for my self and let the others respond at their choosing. I had my surgery done Sept. 14, 2012. The reason I had it done was because of uncontrollable vertigo, dizzyness has allways been a problem with me because all though I have Meniere's in my right ear, I had in my left inner ear an Acustic Neuroma (benign brain tumor that wraps itself around the 8th craynal nerve, the same that controlls facial nerve, hearing and balance) I lost both 100% hearing and 100% balance and minor facial nerve problems because of this condition and treatment. So all my balance and hearing comes from my meniere's effected right ear. I have no other method to control balance/vertigo. Like everyone you meet with this condition there are different circumstances to each case. I never ment to have this surgery to help my fullness or dizzyness but had hoped it would help the Vertigo. The head and inner ear has a lot of extra fluid in it after this surgery because of the increased blood flow to the region. It may take up to three months for this to settle down. As of today about 6 weeks later, my vertigo is worse, head is fuller and my hearing is decreased by about 20%. The sensation is that I have a ear full of water like you get from being in the pool or shower. My conclusion is that it is too early from me to draw a conclusion. Even if at this stage if I could do it over again I would. Lo risk, the worse that can happen is that I am out a few bucks in co-pays and no worse off. In three months, which will be before Christmas I should have a more definative prognosis.
You may also want to look at Ginkgo Biloba Extract. I would not try this if you are currently using a perscription treatment. Look at Liz Greens site she has Menier's also but uses only natural or homopathic treatments.
