pear1240, My ENT Dr. at my last visit last year, told me that I was not to
drive my more. This was due to I started having drop attacks. He did not take my driver's license, and I do not think he reported me because you would think someone would of sent me a letter telling me to surrender my license. I would think if something happened when you were driving and this showed up in your records it could be a problem. I have not driven a car for over 2 years. I must say it stinks. My only four wheels now is my John Deer. I don't let anyone else cut grass, I tell them it's my only four wheels I have. :)

Thanks...wish I could take john deer to Publix and the doctor. It just hit me because I was making my auto insurance payment and the thought. Came to my mind that if I had an accident (it may nothave anything to do with MD or Vestibular N...just stupid mistake) if my insurance company finds out about the diagnosis can they refuse to pay damages and I could get sued. Maybe its my wild imagination but does anyone have any experience with auto insurance???

Zeyda, I had never thought of that! They have not asked for my license but I am very cautious about when I can and can not drive. I would say that 80% of the time I don't simply becuase I dont want to hurt myself or someone else. But you do bring up a very good point!

My doctor told me to not drive if I was having a bad day and if I did and was in an accident, he would tell them I have Menieres and the state would take my license. But, my brother in Illinois had 2 unexplained seizures 18 yrs ago and is a a low dose of some med and the doc never said anything about his license. So I think it goes state by state but your doctor would have to report your condition.

When I renewed my license in May they asked if I had any conditions. That could effect my ability to drive. I told her that I had vertigo attacks and she said well do you know enough to pull over when you have one? I answered yes and she said ok. The problem was I don't think she truly understands what it does to you. This was in OH.

Lots of stuff in the news today about cars that drive themselves or can take over if the driver becomes impaired. Google say's it's about 5 years away. GM says it's about 3 years away. cost would be about $2K over the car's price. Something to look forward to I guess.

I think it is worth the while to look at your local state driving codes and see how they deal with this kind of disability, you can do that online or call the motor vehicle division in your state. Some states it is manditory that you report, in some countries outside the US, the UK for example you must surender your licence. In general if you got into a small crash up it probably wouldnt raise much fuss (perhaps yes, perhaps no) but if you killed someone or severly injured a person or yourself then the insurance company will look everywhere for signs of neglegence. They do this so they do not have to pay the claim. This form of neglegence is not limited to just driving with MD but may spill over into what medician you are taking to deal with the symptoms. In many cases you are perscriped some class of narcotic which if you are pulled over you could be arrested for imparied driving (same deal as drunk driving). If you injure or kill someone while on your meds you may have acted negelently. I dont know of too many insurance companies who will pay a claim if it is found that the driver got drunk and caused an accident. This is a great question and if you really have a concern call or check your local DMV and perhaps call a local attorney. Even if the attorney cant be reached talk to his legal secretary, they usually do 80% of the work in all his cases and sometimes to me know the law better.

I also had unexplained seizures 25 years ago in Minnesota. I had to give up my driver's license for several months. I had to have a doctor's signature before I could drive again. My seizures happened at night in my sleep. With MD I usually get a bit of a warning that I am going to be dizzy. I also know many triggers. I think it is different because I can avoid getting behind the wheel on an "off" day. But, then again, I don't know of any legalities involved with MD and driving. It sounds like we all need an education on this topic.

I think with MD, we all know our own limits and when it is safe to drive and when it is not. I know that I do not go anywhere on a trip that I do not have someone else that can drive. I have had 2 times where I needed to have someone else drive for me.

People please use common sense when you drive.

I believe it depends on the State you live in. While in California they allow you to drive with Meniere's but they also make you have monthly visits with your doctor.
In Florida your doctor will request that you turn over your Passport & Drivers License.
In Georgia they may temporary take your drivers license until you can prove you have it under control and know the symptoms & pull over....

I do have a drivers license but I haven't driven since November, but there has been no threat of them taking it,

No, driving is not a problem with Meniere's. I've had Meniere's since 1979 and the only time I had to stop driving was when I had a seizure (not related to Meniere's). In Mass a person has to be seizure free for a year before the license can be reinstated (via a neurologist). Then I had to retake a driving test and pass before the registry would reinstate my license. But there hasn't been a problem since. Hope this lessens your worry; I can understand.

This year July my drivers license was medically put on hold and I had to get a ID instead because I have both Meneiers's and vasvogal synocpe. I does not know if any doctor will remove it. My license had expired and that when it happened. I am in FL. I did not know that they would had done that.
